Kids Just Wanna Have Fun Project

On the morning of the 26th of February t around 7.30am, the Leos from SMK Assunta, SMK Seafield, SMK Taman Sea, SMK Damansara Jaya, SMK Subang Utama, Leo Club of Petaling Jaya Integrity (O) and the Leo club of ACG Benevolent Untiy(O) gathered in SMK Assunta where the event was held. The clock struck 8.00 in the morning, most of the children from all four homes which are Rumah HOPE, Rumah Charis, Praise Emmanuel Children Home and Rumah Kanak-Kanak Sayang were already in the compounds of the school. The first thing lined up for the day was the opening ceremony. First of all, the emcees gave a brief explanation about the purpose of the event which was then followed by a couple of speeches and the acknowledgement of the honored guests and as well as the children at the event. To officiate the event, the honored guests were invited to cut the ribbon as a sign of officiating the event. Next up, the children were told to head over to the field for a morning exercise

Following the morning warm up, the children were split up into their individual groups and the games were started. After that, it was lunch time and so the Leos led the children to the canteen of SMK Assunta to have lunch. The children’s meals were ordered from Kentucky Fried Chicken. As one of the homes happened to be vegetarian, they were given noodles for lunch. After lunch the children were given ice-cream which was a hit among them as they kept on coming back for more.

Lastly, after lunch the kid headed back up into the Gallery of SMK Assunta for some entertainment. First up was the performance entitled “Double Dream Hands” which was performed by several Leos. Following the performance was a clown show. It was definitely a fun performance and good one indeed.

At 2.30 in the afternoon, the closing ceremony was held. The emcees of the event called the caretakers as well as the guests of honor on stage to each receive a token of appreciation from the Leos. Later on, the prizes were given out to the winners of the games and the project ended with the handing out of goodie bags to the children as a sign of appreciation for their presence at our event. The children left the school compound with smiles from ear to ear.

Report on a Visit to Rumah Hope

Last Saturday,on the 12 of February 2011 The Leo club of SMK Assunta organised a visit to the Rumah Hope. It was from 9.00 am till 12.00 pm. The Rumah Hope was located in Petaling Jaya, which was nearby our school. We left the school at 9.00 am and reached the home at 9.15am.When we arrived ,the kids were still doing their chores and so we waited outside. There were about 18 Leo members who attended this trip.

There were 28 orphans there. Most of them were between 5-15 years old. They were very polite and adorable. We played some games with the orphans which included an ice-breaking game where running was involved and another where one must pass an orange to each group member using only their neck.

After we finished with the games, brunch was served to the orphans about 11.00 am.The school canteen had sponsored some fried rice and noodles. This was the time where the Leos had the chance to interact more with the orphans.

The gifts were distributed right after which consists of sweets and candy. We all gathered in one place and took a group photo. Then we realized that it was already 11.45 am which meant we had to leave. We said our goodbyes and left the home. We reached school safely at 12.00 pm and from there, the leos went home after a wonderful morning.

Report on “Chinese New Year Day Out with PECH”

On the 29th of January 2011, which was on Saturday, the Leo Club of SMK Assunta organized a trip to the Praise Emmanuel Children’s Home, P.E.C.H in Petaling Jaya. We reached the home at around 10 o’clock in the morning.

Before we started, we mixed around with the kids there, getting to know them better. After that, we introduced ourselves to the kids, and they did the same to us too. The leo’s were then separated in groups of three, with three kids and taught them how to make fishes and lanterns out of ang pau packets.

At about 11.30pm, we had some game sessions with the kids, such as ‘statue dance’ and the ‘passing the sweets’ game. It was a lot of fun. After all those jumping around and laughing with the kids, it is finally time for tea break! We served them drinks, cakes and a chocolate bar each. We took pictures with them, and then it was time to say goodbye to all the children there. We left the place around 12.50 pm and reached school before 1.00 pm.

From this project, we learnt about how these children support themselves. We should spend more time to get to know them and not look down on them. We had a great time with the children and it was great to be able to spread the joy of the festive season with them.
