Report on Christmas Caroling

On the 15th of December 2012, Saturday, Leos gathered at the canteen of SMK Assunta around 12.30 p.m. We had lunch and we left the school at 2.00 p.m. We reached the first home, Home of Peace at 3.00 p.m. We started caroling and Santa Claus gave out gifts to the kids. The songs we sang were Little Drummer Boy, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, Santa Claus Is Coming To Town, We Wish You A Merry Christmas, Felice Navidad, Jingle Bells, Joy To The World, White Christmas, 12 Days Of Christmas and Frosty The Snowman. However, we left early cause the kids had to leave to the church. The next home we went was Charis Home. There were a lot of kids there. We caroled with the kids there and they were quite happy as they received Santa’s gifts. We sponsored story books and footwear to the home. Then, we reached school around 5.30 p.m.

The next day, 16th of December, Sunday, Leos gathered at SMK Assunta school canteen at 3.00 p.m. We had light food such as sandwiches and cakes. We left the school at 4.00 p.m. and reached the Bellevue Residential Homecare, an old folk’s home at 4.30 p.m. We caroled and supplied fruits for each of them which were sponsored by Leo Lakshmi Ramanathan. The old people seemed very happy on our visit. After that, we left around 5.15 p.m. The next home, Trinity Children’s Centre was located near Assunta Primary School. We reached there at 5.30 p.m. The home was small to fit all of us in but we managed to. We sang and the kids were happy with their gifts by Santa.

It rained heavily when we are about to leave. The rain did not seem to stop so we walked to the bus with umbrellas. We reached school at about 6.10 p.m. Although it was a tiring day, the kids, teachers and Leos were very joyful.

Report on International Relationship Camp 2012

From the 7th to 9th of December 2012, a representative from the Leo Club of Assunta Secondary School attended a camp which is called International Relationship Camp.
The camp was organized by Leo Clubs of Metro Methodist College Kuala Lumpur, Sunway Metro, IICS Metro, Serdang, Sungai Buloh, Damansara Metro, USJ 4, Subang Utama, and Bandar Utama Damansara (3). Leos from Sarawak, Sabah, Sri Lanka and Indonesia were participating in the camp as well. The venue of the camp was Methodist College Kuala Lumpur.

Day 1

Registration began at 9:00 a.m. at the entrance of Methodist College Kuala Lumpur. Each Leo was given a nametag, together with a puzzle piece, and 2000 Leo Dollars. Later, The Leos went to leave their luggage in their dorms before getting briefed on rules and regulations in the assembly hall. Everyone’s phones were taken away, which is to be kept by the committee through out the whole camp. After briefing, Leo Jono explained the use of Leo Dollars, or more commonly called as Leo money throughout the whole camp, which is used to serve as points for each group. It is also used for toilet passes, food, games and penalties. Leo Dollars could be earned through vacancies or through buying stocks, properties, or savings. Leo Dollars could also be taken away in different situations such as robbery and fraud. The group with the most amounts of Leo Dollars would be the winner by the end of the camp.
Next was the ice-breaking session, and group activities. During the ice-breaking, everyone had to use their puzzle pieces to complete a puzzle. Those with matching pieces formed a group with names based on super heroes. Leos took this opportunity to get to know each other. For group activity, each group had to create their own group cheer in just 30 minutes.
Lunch was soon served at 12 p.m., and after that was the opening ceremony. Soon after the opening ceremony, teambuilding activity began at 2 p.m. The first part of teambuilding was to make sign boards for “Leo Day Celebration” for the second day of the camp. As for the second part of teambuilding, each group had to drop an egg from the first floor without breaking it when it reaches the ground. To do this, materials such as newspapers, raffia string, a piece of tape and balloon were given to prevent the egg from breaking. Groups that achieved the goal of the activity were given a large sum of Leo Dollars.
After teambuilding, the Leos returned to the assembly hall for a theme talk given by Ernie Chen. The talk was very interesting and interactive. The talk focuses on making a change in the people we meet everyday in our lives. At 5:30 p.m., the Leos went back to their dorms to finish making their sign boards, and to discuss about International Relationship Night performance. Leos took the time to interact and communicate with each other during this period of time.
At 7 p.m., everyone went down to the canteen for a barbeque dinner. Everyone barbequed their own dinner and had fun eating and talking. By 10 p.m., it was time for night games. Each group would clear several different stations by completing the task, and if successful, the group would earn Leo Money.
By 11 p.m., everyone returned to their dorms, took their baths and went to sleep.

Day 2

The next day, Leos were woken up by the sound of a whistle blown by Leo Jono. At 7 a.m., the Leos were put through an hour session of exercising and commando course. After the session, the Leos proceeded to the canteen for breakfast and some went back to their dorms to refresh themselves up. At 9 a.m., Lion Samuel, Lion Hudson, and Lion Alan Thoo gave the Leos a workshop in the assembly room. The workshop thought everyone the importance of teamwork, communication, listening and voicing out. Problems faced in the Leo Clubs were also pointed out.
After the workshop, Leos had their lunch and had a group discussion about International Relationship Night performances. Half an hour before “Leo Day Celebration”, each group finished adding final touches to their sign boards. Then, everyone proceeded to the car park and was briefed on the activity. Leos were to walk around Little India with their sign boards. Each group must interact with passer-bys and make them smile. The best group would win a large sum of Leo Dollars.
Despite the hot afternoon, all the Leos were doing their best to reach out and interact with people of all ages in Little India. Tourists and children were approached as well. It all ended with a group photo shoot, and everyone returned to the college. Many photos were taken during the celebration. Though most of the Leos felt tired and thirsty, we did enjoy ourselves during the celebration.
At 5 p.m., Leos took this time to discuss about their group performances. An hour later, all the Leos wore costumes of countries they were representing and went to the canteen for dinner. Some Leos were still practicing their group performances in their dorms. At 7 p.m., everyone went to the assembly hall for International Relationship Night. Emcees for the night were Leo Timothy and Leo Clement. Everyone had fun watching each group performances, and even Leos from Sri Lanka and Indonesia had their own special presentation about their own clubs. It was definitely a night to remember for all of the Leos.
After that night, the Leos were woken up early in the morning for a surprise short birthday celebration in the college’s car park. It was a special celebration for the Leos who were born in the month of December. After the unexpected celebration, everyone went back to sleep.

Day 3

On the final day, the Leos woke up at 7:30 a.m., and went down for breakfast at 8 a.m. After breakfast, there was a final teambuilding activity in which each group would have to role-play as detectives and solve a murder/robbery case. It was very interesting and exciting, as each group was determined to find out who the real culprit was.
After the end of teambuilding, it was already lunchtime and the Leos had to get ready for the closing ceremony which was at 1:00 p.m. During the closing ceremony, the winning group was announced for earning the most amounts of Leo Dollars. The group members were then given a prize each. After the closing ceremony, everyone had one final photo shoot.
The camp officially ended at 3 p.m. The camp turned out to be a success with Leos learning a lot of new things at the camp, and enjoying themselves as well. Leos went home hoping that the camp will be organized again next year, bringing new experiences along the way.

Report on International Day Video

On the 4th and 5th of December, Leo Kendra assisted by Leo Wing Yan compiled many pictures of past projects organized by our club as well as attended by our members from 3 in the afternoon till 3 in the morning.

The video was aimed not only as a tribute to International Leo Day, but as a way to attract the attention of younger Assuntarians who may be interested in joining Leo for the second half of the fiscal year. It was a great attempt at showing others the true meaning of Leo and giving everyone a taste of what type of projects we have.

As a result, our club got a very good feedback from many. Some even eagerly commented saying they can't wait to join next year. We hope that all our efforts had paid off and will see an increase in our membership in the month to come.

Report on Leo Leadership Camp 2012

From the 24th to 29th of November 2012, 17 Leos from the Leo Club of SMK Assunta attended the annual Leo Leadership Camp organised by the Leo Club of Petaling Jaya Integrity and sponsored by the Lions Club of Petaling Jaya. This camp was held at Kem Bina Semangat, Ampang Pecah, Kuala Kubu Bharu.

Day 1 (24th November 2012)
The 17 Leos gathered at A&W car park at 8.00 a.m. on Saturday morning. A bus ferried us from A&W to the campsite in Kuala Kubu Bharu. There were 37 participants altogether.  The participants were from SMK Assunta, SMK Taman SEA, SMK Damansara Jaya and SMK Taman Petaling. Omega Leos from the Leo Club of Petaling Jaya were also present. The camp was called to order by resigning officer and current President of The Leo Club of Petaling Jaya Integrity, Leo Bryan. This was followed by a speech from Lion Advisors, Lion Ivan Ho, Lion Fion Tey and Camp Organising Chairperson Leo Nicholas Tiong. Participants were briefed regarding the rules and regulations of camp and were introduced to some of the facilitators of Kem Bina Semangat, Pak Ngah, Abang Sham, Abang Zack and Pak Nasir.

Later, participants were brought to their respective dormitories. Once they had settled in, the participants had an ice breaking session to get to know each other better. The ice breaking game was known as ‘speed dating’ where each participant was given 30 seconds to introduce themselves and get to know the person opposite them.
After lunch, the participants were sent out to the grounds for the Trust Fall. In this activity, a few campers held a sack among them and another participant had to fall onto the sack from a 6 foot high platform. All participants were required to fall onto the sack. Next, participants moved on to the ‘High Rope’. Participants had to walk on mere ropes while they were suspended 20 feet in the air. That evening, participants were split into 2 groups and were asked to come up with their own cheer and flags. Over the next 2 hours participants were seen drawing, painting, singing and dancing out their cheer. The evening ended with members of the Blue Hawk team and the Red Bull team presenting their team flag and cheer.
Day 2 (25th November 2012)
The following day, participants were asked to do rappelling and flying fox from 30 foot above the ground. Those with fear of heights were given the opportunity to face their fears. That afternoon, the teams were asked to discuss how they were going to build their rafts. Teams were provided with 4 pieces of wood, 3 planks, 6 barrels and some rope. They were required to build their rafts and all the team members had to raft to a part of the lake to retrieve their team flags. Before rafting, Abang Sham and Abang Zack had ‘Water Confidence’ session with the campers so that campers would be aware of what to do in case of emergencies. The Red Bull team came in first followed by the Blue Hawk team.
Then in the evening, campers were asked to play ‘Cobweb’. A cobweb is a game in which there are many holes of different shapes of odd sizes. The first hole needed 3 people to go through it for the team to get its license. Once the teams had their license, they were then allowed to use any of the holes to send its members. However, if the camper had touched one of the strings, that hole will be closed and members who had used the hole to go to the other side had to do it again with another hole.  Each member of the team had to go through the cobweb to the other side by depending on their team members to help them go through it.

Day 3 (26th November 2012)
Early next morning, campers had to prepare their backpacks to go jungle trekking. The journey into the jungle was very challenging as it was a very steep track to go through. There were even some places where campers had to squat so that they do not fall. There was even a boulder about the size of a terrace house. On our way there Abang Sham pointed out a plant that could glow in the dark.
Around noon, the campers reached the river. They were given a break so that they could eat their lunch. Abang Zack also showed campers what they should to do when they were lost in the jungle. He showed them some plants which are edible such as mata itik, lemba, asam kudai and buah salak. Abang Zack also thought campers 4 rules before attempting to eat any leaves in the forest. The two teams then had a game of water polo. While campers were coming back, it had started to rain. Everybody rushed back to the campsite as fast as they could.
Later that evening, there were some team building activities held to incorporate important values in the participants. These activities included dodge ball and a silent game of minesweeper.

Day 4 (27th November 2012)
On the fourth day, all the participants were gathered around a 12 foot wall. Both teams were needed to work together to climb over the wall. Only 3 people were allowed to stay on top of the wall to help the person who was climbing. All campers successfully, managed to climb over wall with the help of other campers. The next activity was ‘plug-the-hole’. Each team was presented with a barrel with holes in it and a broken pail to scoop water from the river. The motive of the game was to ensure that water in the barrel overflowed. Campers were permitted to use their socks and shoes to close the holes.
That afternoon, the two teams were put through an obstacle course that challenged them mentally and physically. The obstacle involved a great level of teamwork and trust among team members. Some of the obstacles were the monkey bars, Tarzan swing, Commando Crawl, an Electric fence and a Spider web. The camping and campfire activity of the night had to be cancelled due to the rainy weather. Instead participants were jumbled up and asked to figure out a complicated logic game.

Day 5 (28th November 2012)
In the morning, campers sat through a briefing about kayaks and later had a short game with their paddles. Members of the Blue Hawk and Red Bull teams were mixed up and asked to kayak together. Having picked their kayaks the participants then kayaked around the lake, they grouped about three times to exchange partners with other campers. After a short while of kayaking, everyone’s kayaks were capsized. Campers had to assist one another while getting onto the kayak. There was also an activity where campers had to run in the water to reach shore. Many campers found this tiring as they weren’t allowed to swim ashore. After kayaking, campers were asked to go back to their dorms to bathe, change and get ready for the closing ceremony.

The entire afternoon was spent in the hall where the camp facilitators announced the best camper in both teams. Prizes were also awarded to The Most Popular Camper, The Most Supportive Camper and The Overall Best Camper for each team respectively. Shortly they had a photo shoot session for everybody to preserve their memory of being at camp. Then participants were given evaluation forms to fill up regarding their time at camp. All the participants were also called to share their experience at camp.
After the closing ceremony, came the farewell and fellowship night. Every school had prepared a performance. The fellowship and farewell night lasted until 2 a.m. Everyone was sad that they had to go home the following day.

Day 6 (29th November 2012)
Almost everybody slept in late that morning. Everyone was still tired from the long hours spent chatting with their friends. All the campers took a long time to pack up their things and got prepared for the journey back home. During the last few hours there campers were seen chatting happily. At 1.30 p.m. the bus arrived to take them home.

Throughout this camp, the Leos learnt to trust one another, follow orders from the leader, voice out their opinion, step up their game and take a step back to let others lead.  They also gained knowledge like tying ropes and survival in the jungle. Many of them also had the chance of facing their fears. This camp has been an opportunity for many to bring out the leader in them and support their teammates in whatever they attempt. Although many were taken away from the comfort of their home, they proved that they are capable of living in minimal comfort. It has indeed been a very educational, adventurous and thrilling camp for many. It is hoped that more Leos from SMK Assunta would participate in it next year.

The participants paid fully attention while designing their piece. They contributed their creative drawing and colouring skills which attracted our attention.

We were instructed to help the kids if they were to encounter any problems. Meanwhile, we were also given health brochures to be given out to the people there. By and large, this was a good opportunity to trigger the kids’ art talents as well as to acknowledge the children’s hard work.

We were separated into different tables according to the number of our name tags and had an ice breaking session within the table members. Settings of ground rules were announced and we had an ice breaking session again with the other groups. Each group had to find three things they have in common and shared it out to the other groups. Then, Activity 1 started with an empowerment talk on Self-Esteem from one of the hoses. Two videos about judging on ones' self from Dove were presented. An activity called 'Shopping Spree' was held where each group had to send three representatives from each group and fish out a personality card from a paper bag and stick it on their forehead. He/she has to guess out their own personality based on what the shopkeepers describe them as. 2 of the Leos, Leo Ruby Wong and Leo Teo Shin Li, were among who got nominated to go in front for the activity.

Next, a worksheet was given to every participant and they had to fill up the 'Self Esteem Wheel' and shared it among the group members and the activity was called 'Know Your Worth'. Then, all the participants had to take a small piece of paper and scribble what they don't like about themselves and put it in a bowl with the paper crushed. We were given a piece of mahjong paper to draw out what they think of 'Sustainable Development'. A mini quiz was given on the screen and we were to answer it. A screening of two inspirational videos which are 'The Apple Analogy of the World' and 'Severn Suzuki' really opened our eyes about the importance of developing more sustainably. Later, an activity called 'Attitudes' was carried out. Two pieces of mahjong paper and a bag of cards were given to each group to sort out. It was to give participants an idea of what kind of attitudes were needed to build a more sustainable world and which attitudes we should avoid in order to prevent ourselves from contributing to a unsustainable world.

We then were dismissed for lunch and we came back with the third activity which was 'Breakfast with Mentors' where young people were taught how to manage an event of empowerment talks and supplementary activities to polish our leadership skills. We were placed into groups of people whom we are comfortable working with. We were given a piece of mahjong paper to write out our plans on managing the empowerment talks. A few of the groups presented on what they had organized and we were also given the opportunity to come up and present our organized plan.

Lastly, everyone was gathered to take a group photo and certification presentation was carried out. We then dismissed for refreshments and went home after that as fresh polished leaders with our knowledge from the talk.

We put the coloured rice in to it. We put the coloured rice nicely and inserted the colours exactly like a peacock. Pink and red were made the colours of the petals, while dark blue and light blue were the colours of the peacock body.
Then, we put white, yellow, dark green, light green and red for the colours of the feathers. We had many fun while putting this peacock ‘Kolam’. Some of our school teachers praised us and told us that we were diligent. We drew some patterns by using the suji flour so that it would not look messy.
Finally, we used the same flour to write the words 'Happy Diwali' and 'Leo Club of Assunta' by the sides of the peacock. We finished this Peacock 'Kolam' around 5.00 p.m. At last we enjoyed this activity.
