Report on Interact Club of SMKA International Understanding Day 'The Invisible Innocents: Breaking Away from the Boulevard'

On the day of 6th of July 2013, interact club of SMK Assunta had invited Leos from Assunta to their IU day. The IU day of SMK Assunta was held in the hall and started from 10 a.m. to 12 noon.

This year, their theme will be ‘The Invisible Innocents: Breaking Away from the Boulevard’. The word Invisible means something that we cannot see, or something that seems to not be there. Innocents here refer to children, whose souls are pure and innocent of anything.

Yet, their innocence is tainted with suffering, on the streets where we regard them as invisible. Everyday people carry on with their daily lives, working and such without regarding these seemingly unseen fixtures that lurk in the corners of streets as if they are invisible. These invisible innocents work, live and sleep on these streets, with no place to call home. They plan to help these 'invisible innocents' by helping them to 'break away from the boulevard' meaning to get them off the streets.

Their goal this year is to contribute as much as possible to raise funds for street children in urban Myanmar. Myanmar is home to many children, forced to work in the streets out of poverty. There are three kinds of street children; children who live and work on the streets, children who work in the streets but have a home to go to, and children who live on the street without family support. At a young age, they see this children forced to be independent at a much too early age. That reason, their organization aims to raise RM 30,000 through this International Understanding Day to assist in the succession of this project. We will collaborate with World Vision Malaysia. World Vision plans to focus on non-formal education (NFE), health care, school support and recreation for these street children while setting up community based centres to prevent children from living and working on the street. The programme also provides free education through NFE centres and school support (fees & materials) to poor children who are attending formal schools.

The event started with a speech from the Emcee. Then, the performer, Nash the Assuntarian with a big voice performed brilliantly on the stage that day. Next, the students of SMK Assunta represents the interact club of Assunta to perform 3 different types of race’s dance. The first one will be the Malay dance then followed by Chinese and Indian’s dance.
After that, we watched a short film about the lifestyle of children from Myanmar. Then, a girl came to Assunta from far to perform 2 songs with a very nice and sweet voice. Although there’s an electrical problem, she managed to sing perfectly without any background music. Then, the magic show is the next. Chris Cheong, the youngest Malaysia’s magician came to SMK Assunta and performed some magic show. He first performed about hand and showed us how he tricked with our hands. Then ‘mind reading’ is the next with the help of his assistant starting with a thick novel book. Chris actually succeeds reading his assistance’s mind. Next, he did a very excited and high risked magic show. He prepared 3 paper bags and placed sharp steel on top of the wood and put it inside either one of the 3 paper bags and closed them up. Then, he asked his assistant to mix the paper bags up.
When Chris him stopped when his assistant wants to. It was dangerous if his assistant had chosen the wrong paper bag because his hand might be injured. Chris succeeds to choose the safest paper bag at the end. Lastly, the most welcome guest is Caprice. He and his partners were performing hip hop dance and rapping. Almost everyone went near to him and support him. After his fans took some photos with him, they left.

Lastly, gifts were given out as appreciation for the clubs and authorities who have attended and everyone was let out for refreshments. The members of Leo club of Assunta really had a great meaningful day with the our school and other’s interactors.

Leading the Blind event. This exhilarating event was organized by the Lions Club of Petaling Jaya. The event was attended by all the Leo Clubs and Lions Clubs in the district.           At the first crack of dawn, as the sun was glistening through the horizon, the excited Leos made their way to the venue. The event spotted an amazing turn up, of people from all walks of life. As soon as the Leos had taken their attendance, they were of mingling and mixing away with the other fellow Leos from our sister clubs. There were certainly many bonds and friendships made during the event. This was especially good for the incoming Leos as this was definitely an opportunity for them to get to know more Leos.

Around 8.00 am, all the participants were asked to gather in the car park for some warm up exercises. The exercises were led by some Leos from the Leo Club of Taylors College Subang Jaya. The work out was amazing, as it was accompanied by music, which really sent everyone’s spirits high. After the warm up by the energetic Leos, a few VIP’s proceeded to the podium to make a few speeches. Minutes before the event began, the organizers gave a short briefing on the rules and regulations pertaining to the walk. The participants than were given their blindfolds and were ready to rumble.

At precisely 8.45 am on that lovely Sunday morning, the participants started on the route. They walked in pairs of two, one of the partners being blindfolded, while the other guided the blindfolded partner. The high-spirited Assuntarian Leos took a lead, as they were somewhere in front of the entourage, happily chanting the Leo Roll Call. They were certainly enjoying themselves. They also made banners and play cards for the event, to further promote their passion and excitement.

The walk was very pleasant and refreshing as all the participants were chatting along the path and strolling animatedly all the way. About half way through the route, all the participants stopped for a short break to devour some quenching refreshments. The Leos were spirited all the way, until the very end.

Upon entering the car park after the walk, all the participants were required to take a number for the lucky draw. Since it was also Father’s Day, there was a special lucky draw for all the fathers amongst the participants. The lucky draw was very exciting as many happy people took home many great prizes and goodies.

As the event approached its conclusion, it was time to give out the prizes too the respective Leos clubs. We were more than proud when the organizers announced that our Leo Club had bagged all the prizes in each category! It was a very beautiful moment for all the Leos. The prizes won were for Outstanding Attendance, Most Donations Collected and Overall Champions. This just goes to show how much we love our club, and strive to always serve it to the best of our abilities. Our dear president, Leo Kendra Hema was jubilant as she strided to the podium to accept the champion’s trophy.

At the end of the day, all the Leos were very delighted with their wonderful achievements. We also learned so much. We learned to be thankful for the things we take for granted in our lives like our eyes and the gift of sight. The Leos also had the amazing experience of walking blindfolded all over the town! It also helped us gain trust in one another even more, and grow stronger as Leos. We also learned to be generous and give to those less fortunate than us. We hope that the event next year will have an even staggering attendance, with more Leos striving to make a difference in our community.

On 16th of May 2013, there was an annual Teacher’s Day celebration at SMK Assunta. A few days before this, the Leo’s started preparing their gifts on behalf of the Leo Club of Assunta Secondary School. The gifts that were prepared were red pens with bows tied around them.

We, the Leos, thought that since the mid-term examinations were just over, the teachers were sure to have tons of examination papers to mark, so we thought we would help them out.

On the 16th of May 2013, the pens were distributed early in the morning to all the teaching staff of the school. At 8.00 a.m., some of the Leo Club members volunteered to sell some homemade cookies and roses to the students who wanted to give their favourite teachers a token of appreciation. It took 3 hours to finish selling the cookies and roses.
