A Report on Teacher's Day Gifts 2012
On the 23rd
of May 2012, Leos gathered after school to help prepare gifts for the
much-awaited Teacher’s Day celebration. The goal was to present the teachers
with a token of appreciation for all their hard work and dedication to the
students. Leos worked tirelessly for two hours to prepare 120 gifts for the
teachers and staff of the school. The outcome was a little bag filled with 8
colourful sweets, a red pen with a heart-shaped pipe cleaner wrapped around it
and a tag saying Happy Teacher’s Day!
Teacher’s Day was
celebrated on the25th of May 2012. Several Leos were up and early at school
handing out the gifts by 7.00 in the morning. All the teachers were overjoyed
to receive the little bag from the Leos and many hugs and “Thank you’s” were
exchanged along the way. The headmistress, Pn. Rita was gifted a little snow
globe and heart-shaped hook to hang her handbag at the edge of the table.
The teacher advisors
of the Leo Club, Puan Betty and Puan Martita were also given a snow globe and
the little crystal hook for all their love, patience, guidance and dedication to
the club. Without them, we could not have possibly have been as successful as
we are today! The Leos did not forget to thank the office staff, the lab assistants,
the canteen operators and the caretakers of the schoo as well. The Leos were
roaring with love as they handed out gifts unconditionally to everyone who had
contributed to the school.
So, thank you teachers for : taking a hand, opening a mind, and touching a heart.

A Report on Journey into the Deep Blue Sea
On the 28th of April 2012, The Leo Club of Assunta organized a trip for the children of Rumah Juara to Kuala Lumpur Conventional Center (KLCC), Aquaria Science. Thirteen leos and two teacher advisor which were Puan Betty Toh and Lion Malcolm accompanied us there with approximately 19 children from the home.
The traffic jam was quite bad, so we unloaded the bus and began to walk. The walk was a really fun one. The Leos got to bond with the children even more. When we arrived, the children waited at the waiting room where videos of underwater life was shown while waiting for their tickets to be bought. The children enjoyed watching the videos and couldn’t wait to go in after that. Before going in, the leo president briefed the children on the rules and regulations.
After the tickets were bought, we were allowed to go in. Everyone lined up in a straight line as we went through the entrance. Each leo had to be incharge of atleast a kid each for safety reasons. Everyone had a great opportunity to see the many varieties of fish such as huge stingrays and huge white sharks. We were even able to touch coral, a baby shark and even a starfish! It was a great experience for both leos and the children.
We were even privileged to watch two feeding sessions which were the feeding of the otters and the fish feeding show. The children were really excited during all the feedings and watched attentively. Everyone was asked to sit down at the ‘fish theater’ to watch the fish feeding. We saw divers feeding the large and starving stingray, turtles and colourful seafish.
After the feeding sessions, we continued our walk around aquaria. We saw an Albino Chinese Softshell Turtle that is very rare nowadays and other amphibians and reptiles which we have never seen before. Before going out, all the children and leos made a pledge to not eat shark fin soup to save the sharks in the wild that are going to be under extinction soon. Everyone that pledged was given a badge each.
We had great fun with the orphanage kids. They were very amazed by the sea creatures that they saw there. Before leaving, we took a group picture together outside of Aquaria. At around 2pm, we sent the orphanage kids back to their orphanage and gave them lunch. After long goodbyes, we walked to our bus and got back to our school. Once we arrived at school, we were provided with food and drinks. We were very tired and exhausted after the trip, but we were glad that we had fun with the orphanage kids. I look forward towards having a charity program like this in the future.

A Report on the Treasure Muffins for Fun Hunt
On the 24th of April 2012, a few members of the Leo Club of SMK Assunta came together to bake muffins for the participants of the Assunta Charity Fun Hunt. The Fun Hunt was an activity organized by the alumni of SMK Assunta to raise money for charity. The Fun Hunt brought together over 400 people from all around the area for a huge game of Treasure Hunt requiring participants to run all the way from SMK Assunta to Sunway Pyramid! In conjunction with the Fun Hunt, the Leo Club of SMK Assunta decided to bake muffins to be sold.
The Leo members who took part worked closely with the Leo teacher advisor, Pn Betty Toh who is an amazing cook, to produce the muffins. The cooking room was filled with Leo girls and even though there were more that turned out to help, they had to be turned down because as they say, too many cooks spoil the broth. Each pair of Leo girls worked quickly to make about 4 to 5 trays of muffins each. In the end, there was more than 100 muffins that they had made.
The whole time that the Leos were baking the muffins, there were no accidents except for one point where the electricity went off. Although it was off, the Leos still persevered and they ended up baking the muffins using a gas oven. After the muffins were done, they were ready to be packed and sold. A few Leo girls worked together to pack the muffins while other sold them. Two muffins were sold for RM 1. Lion Malcolm who was also present made delicious pasta for all the Leos who helped bake the muffins.
Being good Leos, they made sure the cooking room was spotless the way it had been before. Everyone worked together and in no time, the cooking room was as spotless. Everyone had a good time working together baking the muffins. Under the watchful eye of Pn. Betty Toh, all the muffins turned out nicely and they were sold out quickly too. Hopefully, others projects like this one will be done again.

The blind students were indeed very intelligent people. Their disabilities did not stop them from being a successful person in life. According to one of the blind people, Mr.Lim, “studying has no formula” he said. It is just reading and remembering the facts. The club members of the Leo Club of SMK Assunta were truly amazed with their unending courage in their lives.
Their journey of reading to the blind ended at about 10.45 am. Everyone said their goodbyes. The club members are all truly inspired and they really look forward to coming again to read to the blind.

A Report on the Annual Blind Leading the Blind Project
On the 15th of April 2012, The Leo Club of Assunta participated in the Annual Blind Leading The Blind Project organized by the Lions Club of Petaling Jaya. The main purpose of this walk is to raise the awareness of the importance of sight. All the Leos were asked to gather in front of Sivic Hall at around 6.45 a.m. to get their attendance taken. Other schools were there around that time as well. The rest of the crowd started walking in at around 7 a.m. As time went by, the amount of participants started to increase tremendously. Soon, the whole carpark was full. At around 7.45 a.m, the Blind School of Setapak arrived and the leos of Assunta willingly paired themselves up with a blind student from the school.
When the participants signed up, each of them were given a sticker to be stuck on their shirts and a blindfold as well. Just before the participants were let off for the 3km walk, a warm up session was conducted by 3 PJI members. We all really enjoyed it. When that was over, everyone was more than ready to start the walk. The pops from the poppers signaled everyone to begin walking.
A few of the Leos stayed back to help out with the goodie bags . We arranged them behind counters for each of our schools to ensure that each and every leo from our schools get a goodie bag. Although they didn’t join in the walk, but they had fun unloading bags from the lorry and arranging them accordingly.
The leos shouted their leo cheers to get the attention of the public throughout the walk. It was a very interesting walk and the leos especially enjoyed it very much. Not long after that, they arrived back to where they started. Evryone was exhausted after such a long walk. As they walked in, they were asked to put their blindfolds into boxes and they were given a lucky draw coupon. There were drinks provided for everyone such as milo and 100 plus. The participants lined up for the refreshments.
Each participant then had to go to the counters to get their goodie bags. There were many sponsored things in the goodie bag. After everyone was settled down, the Lions asked all the leo clubs that participated which were the Leo Club of Assunta, Damansara Jaya, Taman Sea, Taman Petaling and Petaling Jaya Integrity to sit right infront for the prize giving ceremony. Our club received the first prize for bringing the most number of participants for the project and also for collecting the most amount of money. We were given a trophy and some money for our club to use for upcoming projects.
Right after the prize giving ceremony, the lucky draw began. We had our fingers crossed and some of us got lucky. The prizes were really good ones such as a flat screen tv, a home theater system, irons and lots more.
At around 11.30 a.m, the project was finally over. Some of the leos stayed back to help them clean up the place. Although everyone was really tired after such a long walk, the leos didn’t mind at all and each and every one of them went back with a good experience. I felt that the walk was a very successful one and I really hope that we have reached out to the public a lot more and that more of them would join us for the walk next year.

A Report on Sister Enda’s High Tea
On the 24th of March 2012, the Leos of SMK Assunta were invited by the Principal, Puan Rita Shantini to attend the high tea that was especially done for Sister Enda. The high tea began at around 4 p.m. It all started with the alumni singing a few self written songs especially for Sister Enda which she and everyone enjoyed very much.
All of this was then followed by the speeches. Pat Lu, the president of Alumni gave her speech first followed by Sister Enda and Puan Rita. The speeches were very meaningful ones. Everyone listened very carefully. After the speech that was given out by Sister Enda, a wonderful looking cake was brought to the front and the ‘Happy Birthday’ song was sung.
Each of us present was given a slice of cake each. The cake tasted really good. Immediately after all the speeches were over, they invited all the guests to go to the back of the gallery to take their food. The high tea was a great success and we hope that Sister Enda enjoyed herself.

A Report on Mission Leo Possible
Mission Leo Possible was held on the 10th of March. This event was a joint project with our sister clubs. Everyone was told to meet up at the Taman Tun Park. As soon as we got there, we were given a T-shirt to change into. Each group consisted of 5 members which were then broken up into groups of two's and three's. The pair had to solve a puzzle which would reveal the name of the orphanage (Agathian's Shelter Home). It was very confusing and to me involved professional origami work. On the other hand, the three remaining members had to go around the park to find clues on the ingredients of the sandwiches they had to make. Once the teams had made the sandwiches, they had to sell them to people who were in the park. That wasn’t easy because many people in the park had already bought sandwiches from other teams. After selling all the sandwiches, an auction was held. Using the money that each group had collected from the sales of the sandwiches, they bid the money on ang pao packets with an unknown amount of money in it. All groups depended on luck to get ang pao packets with lots of money in it. Later, using the money that each group had acquired, they parted ways to the supermarket to buy things for the orphanage home. The items were stated on a list. After buying all the items on the list , each team made their way to the orphanage. When they got there, all the items that were bought was put on a table in the orphanage. After that, lunch was served. Once everyone had lunch, there were some activities for the kids such as, decorating cupcakes which the kids enjoyed. Lastly, speeches were given by the Lions, followed by the prize giving. All in all, it was a tiring but fun and unforgettable day.
