GREEN VISIT TO AGATHIANS SHELTER
On the 18th of September, the LEO Club of Assunta Secondary School visited the Agathians Children’s Home where there were about 20 to 30 children who were all boys. We, the Leos met up at the school compound at 12.50 pm. As soon as everyone came, we hopped into the bus and left almost immediately. We were accompanied by our teacher advisor, Pn.Low. In the bus, we were given a short briefing by the organizing chairperson, Leo Joey Young on the activities and games she had planned for the visit.
We also brought along goody packs for the children. In the goody packs, there was a lollipop, a pencil and a sand art. As soon as we got there, we handed them out to the children. They were really happy to receive these presents and some of them even begun working on the sand art.
We started off by playing a recycling game. We were all divided into three teams along with the children and once the groups were formed, we made a long line. The 1st person of each group had to pick up the recyclables and pass it along the line until it reaches the last person. The last person then has to arrange it according to its categories such as newspapers, plastic bottles, cans and etc. However, the game got a bit out of hand as the children got a bit excited and the rules of the game were neglected…..and that turned out to be the funny part. Although, the game was not as planned, it was definitely an enjoyable one.
Next, we all thought the children there how to plant vegetable seeds in a pot. The pots were cut out plastic bottles with holes underneath. The organizing chairperson gave the instructions and the children followed and completed the session with success. Lastly, pictures of animals were given out and the kids had to colour them, for the best picture would get a prize. The children were all very creative in their work and everyone had fun doing it.
The day was concluded with the LEO’s saying good bye to all the children and having a snapshot of it for memory. We left at exactly 3.30 pm with a very satisfying feeling. Projects like this not only allows us Leos and the orphans to have a great time together, but also helps us understand the need to GO GREEN in order to preserve and conserve our environment.
