A Report on Donation to PAWS Animal Welfare Shelter

On the 23rd of April 2011, the Leo Club of Assunta Secondary School visited PAWS Animal Welfare Shelter. The Leos of the club generously donated the daily nessessaties for the shelter.

We were warmly greeted by the caretakers of PAWS and they explained to us the needs and problems they face at the shelter. We then presented them with the items we brought such as dog food, treats and bowls. They were pleased and grateful for our donations.

In total, the club donated more than RM250.00 worth of items to PAWS. It was great to know that they appreciate what we gave them.

Report on ‘Blind Leading the Blind’

On the 17th of April 2011, the Lion Club of Petaling Jaya organized a project, ‘Blind Leading the Blind’. It was a charity walk to collect funds to be donated to the Tun Hussein Onn Eye Hospital to aid the Blinds.Everyone gathered at the carpark of Civic Hall around 6.30am. We were energized by refreshments sponsored by Julies. At 7.30am, the special needs people from ‘Pendidikan Khas, Setapah’ arrived and were paired up with most of the Leos. The respective VIPS gave their speeches and the crowd was entertained with a cheerleading routine by the Leos of Damansara Jaya. The walk was officialised by Lion M. Kesavan. The band was leading the way followed by the ‘Kompang group’ and the VIPS. Each pair was given a cloth to be blindfolded. The first km, all of us blindfolded ourselves to be led by our partner after which we were so exhausted that we walked all the way without being blindfolded. SMK Assunta was the most spirited as we were cheering throughout the walk. During our journey, we really had a good time bonding with our partners. We also got to know about their backgrounds and it was really very touching and emotional. When we completed our walk, we collected our goodie bags, and had tidbits to fill our stomach. We then sat down in groups and watched the performance of the cheerleading team by Damansara Jaya. It was then followed by the Lucky Draw. Finally, it was the price giving ceremony that kept everyone eagerly waiting till the end. Once again Assunta has got its name flying high by coming out as the Champion Club and grabbing the Challenge Trophy. All the Leos went home after a satisfying and fun filled morning.

Report on A Visit to Petrosains with Precious Home

On the 16th of April 2011, the LEO club of SMK Assunta organized a visit to Petrosains with the kids from Precious Home. At 8.45 a.m., the Leos gathered at the school carpark. At 9.20 a.m., we boarded the bus, and left for Precious Home. 20 Leos were present.

As we reached Precious Home, the Leos started to get excited as we were all anxious to meet the kids. When we arrived there, we met up with a few board members who had left a little earlier to give the kids breakfast.

The 15 orphans then boarded the bus and were paired up with the Leos. The bus left for Petrosains and on the way there, the Leos bonded with the kids and got to know them a little better.

We reached Petrosains in about 30 minutes. We waited in line while Leo Yong Poh Yee bought the entry tickets. For the next 20 minutes, we waited in line to be seated on rhe entry ride called the Dark Ride .

As we got in, the Leos were reminded to take care of their kids and to stick to the group. The atmosphere was filled with fun and laughter the whole time we were inside. There were many fun and interesting things on display and both the Leos and kids learnt many new things and had a lot of fun at the same time.

At about 1.00 p.m, the Leos and the children reluctantly boarded the bus once again and headed back. It was very quiet because the children slept during the return trip as all the Leos and children were exhausted from the day’s activities.

As we reached Precious Home, the Leos and the kids said their goodbyes with heavy hearts. The children then got off the bus and waved to us as we drove away. We got back to our school safely at about 1.30 p.m. and we were provided lunch. After we ate, the Leos went home after a wonderful and fun-filled morning.

Report on Amplified Camp 2011

On the 9th of April 2011, Leos from the Assunta Secondary School gathered for the Amplified Camp themed OHANA at SMK Assunta. Beginning at 1.00p.m, fellow Leos gathered in the ‘bilik khuliah’ for the opening ceremony where they heard speeches by the teacher advisor, Puan Betty Toh and Lion Malcolm. The Leos were then dismissed for a short lunch break.

After filling up on fuel, the Leos were without doubt, excited and filled with energy for the games that were prepared for them. Several ice breaking games were carried out so that the incoming Leos could get to know their Leo sisters a bit better. The Leos were then separated into 6 groups and given a colour each. As for thinking of a team cheer, everyone put their thinking caps on and spewed out anything to do with their team. Lion Malcolm had given them a head start by asking everyone to include the Māori of New Zealand Haka chant in their cheer.

Cheers aside, all teams cracked their heads figuring out the clues for the directions to their station games. After cracking two clues in a row, Leos were running all over school to finish their games as a team, hoping they would come out on top. Some of the station games were figuring out the artist and the name of a song, walking like a caterpillar together as a team, getting a ping-pong ball into a bowl through a newspaper drain and several more.

By the end of the station games, everyone was beat and couldn’t wait to see who the winners were. Soon after tea time, the prize giving ceremony had begun. Coming in third place was the pink team followed by the blue team and coming in as champions were the orange team. Leos were dismissed at 6.30p.m. That day, Leos went home happy knowing they had strengthen the bonds between their friends and made many new friends, friends so close you could call them a family and family means nobody gets left behind or forgotten.

A Report on Wesley Methodist's IR day

On the 12th of April 2011, 12 Leos from Assunta Secondary School attended the Wesley Methodist International Relations Day. Their theme this year was MIRACLES. When the Leos arrived at the school at 3.45 pm,the event had already begun. At that moment, the Wesley Methodist’s Leo Club Advisor was in the middle of her speech. Soon after, it was time for a performance by the belly dancing team of the school. The crowd went wild as the girls who were performing were very spirited and energetic throughout their routine.

Next was a mime by two talented Leos and judging by the crowds reaction, I can say that the mimes accomplished what they had to and that was to let the audience loosen up by laughing. After that, an inspiring slide show was presented by one of the Leos. It made the audience believe that they too can be a miracle worker and that MIRACLES DO EXIST.

To brighten the spirits of the crowd, a musical feast of singing was showcased, followed by a fashion show by the Leos themselves. That got the crowd cheering and clapping along to the music. The event ended with a souvenir giving ceremony to all the special guests and schools that supported their event. Lastly,at 5.30pm the Leos left Wesley Methodist feeling satisfied and happy. The Leos reached school at 6.00pm.
