A Report on Trip to Pusat Sains Negara

           On the 15 th of March 2012, the Leo Club of Assunta had organized a trip to Pusat Sains Negara .Ten of the Leo members participate in this trip .It was started from 9.00 a.m. to 11.30a.m. First we went to the Aquarium. There was a big overhead fresh water aquarium with varieties of fishes. Then we moved on to the Water Spark. Three elements were highlighted in this area that included water, light and air. We tried several hands on activities including water balance, sound cannon and plasma ball. It was really amazing because we have never tried before. Next, we went to the “Pathways to Science” .There was full with information and knowledge about  Science like cell model, light reflection, constellation and many other interesting exhibits. Moving on, we saw Foam Factory, 'Peneroka  Comel', Fossil, and Origami station too. On Level 2 there were two exhibit halls that including Flight, Thinking machine and Energy World. Hands-on activities were provided too. We even read information about the development of Pusat Sains Negara. At about 11.15am we took a group photo at the main entrance before we left Pusat Sains Negara. It was an  unforgettable day for everyone although we were tired but we enjoyed the trip.

A Report on Revamping the Leo Board

A few Leo’s together with a few probationers gathered after school on the 24^th and 27^th of February to revamp the club notice board. The theme for this year’s board is “Asterismous” which means constellations inspired by our previous Leo installation. The board was fitted with decorations that suited  the theme like silver stars, colourful planets, a little rocket and an earth. The stars were wrapped in foil to make it look silver, while the planets, rocket, and earth were brought to life with poster paint. The earth was also covered with photos from the past leo projects. The rocket is used to display when we do and do not have meetings. We had a lot of fun while progressing. The board looked great once it was completed. All leos and probationers who helped out were given project points. It felt really good to see the board once it was done because it was of the hard work, teamwork and effort of the leos and probationers.

A Report on the School Bazaar 2012

            On the 25th of February 2012, Leos from the Leo Club of Assunta had a sale during the school bazaar in conjunction of Curricular Day. Many of the Leos and probationers helped out on that day.

            Everyone gathered in school at around 7.30a.m. After that, we headed to our assigned tent which was in the middle of our school field. While waiting for the other leos who went to our school’s mutiara basement to get tables and chairs, the rest of the leos started to unpack the things. We were selling bubble tea, novels for Nepal’s T-shirt and badges, limited edition bowling T-shirt and last but not least the ‘Save The Animals’ badges.

All the money that was raised on that day was  for the club so that we could fund our upcoming leo projects except for the ‘Novels For Nepal’ items which were the t’shirts and the badges. The money that we were able to raise for that organisation will be used to build a library in a school in Nepal.

            The bubble tea that we sold was a big hit among the students and it finished really fast! It was sold for RM2.50 per cup. The ‘Save the Animal’ badges were selling off pretty well too as well as the shirts and badges from ‘Novels for Nepal’.

            At around 11a.m. we started to pack up all the things. Some of the leos brought the tables and chairs back to the classrooms. It was a really great day that day and i felt that the leos were able to build a stronger bond too.

A Report on the ‘Reading To The Blind’ project

            On the 18th of February 2012 , the Leo club organized a project to help the blind students read. The project was organized by Leo Natalie Yaw and Leo Karen . Five of the Leo members participated in this project which was Leo Charmaine , Lakshmi , Dhaanyaa , Leo Karen and Leo Natalie. The activity lasted for about 2 hours which was from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Universiti Malaya.

            Karen introduced us to the people we are supposed to read to and we went to their carrels( rooms for disable people). We each were given different topics to talk about like about Malaysia's History, Economics and even on ghosts. They used a braille machine which looked like a typewriter to type whatever we said. Sadly, no books are printed in Braille for the blind students at the University. Some of them use tape recorders and will later listen to it. This project was truly a memorable one as it exposed us to something new and most of all it taught us to be grateful to be blessed with a perfect sight.

A Report on the Valentine’s Day Sales

             On the 13^rd and 14^th of February 2012, the Leo Club of SMK Assunta sold marshmallows and cupcakes for Valentine’s Day . The Leo probationers helped out with the project. The sale was held during the senior recess and junior recess in the school canteen.

            The sale of cupcakes  started during the first senior’s. The form 3 Leo probationers walked around the canteen to sell the cupcakes and marshmallows. There were also some Leos who stayed at the stall. As for the second recess which was the form 4 & 5 recess, the sale became very good and we sold off all of our cupcakes and marshmallows at the end of the day. We also sold some of the cupcakes to our teachers too and they liked it very much.

            After the sale, the Leos started to pack and clean up the area so that we could all go back to our respective classrooms.  The sales were really impressive.

A Report on Dragon New Year 2012

            On the 4th of February 2012, Leos from the Leo Club of Assunta paid a visit to Rumah Juara, a home for underprivileged children. The Dragon New Year project was organized to celebrate Chinese New Year with the children. 10 Leos and 5 probationers took part in this project.

            We were gathered at the school by 10.15a.m and we then headed to Rumah Juara. When we arrived, we started by introducing ourselves to everyone. We were then separated into two groups for an ice breaking game. Two Leo members held up a piece of cloth dividing the two groups who are facing each other. When the cloth is pulled down and the representative of each group can see each other, they would say the name of the person in front of them and the one who says it earlier wins. It was a really fun game.

            After the ice breaker, we sat in small groups, each group with one Leo member and a few children. We taught them how to fold lotuses out of red packets. It was tough in the beginning but they never gave up trying. They managed to fold a lot of lotuses and they were then combined together to form a dragon.

           After Leo Amanda finished up the dragon, we played some games with the children. We were divided into two groups and stood in two circles. We then held hands with people who are not standing beside us and we had to untangle our ourselves after that. The next game was Statue Dance. When the music play, everyone has to dance and when the music pause, we have to stay in that position and are not suppose to move. We had three winners for this game. The children are really creative with the dance steps and danced very well.

            We all had a great time and we were glad we took part in this project. We made many new friends and we're surely going to miss all of them.

A Report on Puan Normal’s Farewell Gift project

              Our beloved teacher, Puan Normal was shifted to another school, and so, the Leo club had decided to give her a very special gift during her farewell which was on the 20^th of February 2012. All the students wrote notes for our teacher and those notes were pasted onto the gift. Even our teacher advisors wrote notes for her. All the Leos that wrote notes were given project points. All the letters that were given by the Leos were pasted onto the gift that was wrapped with brown paper. It made the present look even more attractive with all the creative cards that the leos made. We really hope that our teacher likes the gift.

A Report on Chinese New Year Gifts

Many great ideas were being suggested but it had exceeded the budget. Therefore, a simple gift was proposed. It was a red gift bag which had a mandarin orange, a Chinese decoration together with a stapled note which stated, “It’s a brand New Year! Wishing you endless happiness, fortunes and peace! Gong Xi Fa Cai.” On the 14^th and 15^th of January, 120 of these items were bought in old town.  It was pretty reasonable as it was the Chinese New Year season.

It was packed on the 18^th of January to make sure the oranges weren’t spoilt due to the hot and humid weather and was placed into boxes. On Thursday morning, at around 7.30am with the help of Leo Karishma, the gifts were distributed to not only the teachers but the workers too. The teachers were delighted and were thankful while the workers were elated and appreciated it very much. They were really touched by it.

A Report On The Sales For Assunta Spirit Week

            On the 19^th of January 2012, the Leo Club of SMK Assunta had a project which was organized by the school together with several other clubs. There were a total of 20 Leos who signed up to help out for the sale which was placed near our school canteen. The sale was held during the form 3 and the form 4 & 5 recess and the things that were put up for sale were brownies and some handmade accessories handmade by one of the Leos parents/

            The sale started at the first recess which was the form 3’s recess. The form 3 Leo probationers walk around the canteen selling the brownies and the accessories. We even sold some of it to the juniors from the afternoon session. As for the second recess which was the form 4 & 5 recess, the sale became very good and we sold off all of our brownies at the end of the recesses.

            After the sale, the Leos started to pack and clean up the stall so that we could all go back to our respective classes and to continue our lessons. The income for the sales was around RM200+. The sale was really impressive and we managed to sell all of the brownies of really fast.

A Report on Nose High School Visit 2012

          On the 18^th of January 2012, A few Leo’s from the Leo Club of Assunta participated in the NOSE High School programme that was carried out in school. Before the Japanese students arrived, we were arranged in two rows according to club from Gate C all the way to the canteen. Soon after that, the Japanese students and teachers step foot into our school and that was when the students begin to play the ‘kompang’ to welcome them. We waved our Japanese and Malaysian flags and greeted them as they walked in.

            As soon as we reached the canteen we walked to our assigned tables and met our Japanese partners. It was a little hard to communicate with them but it was fun at the same time. Some of us carried dictionaries around! After breakfast, everyone was called to gather around the ‘dataran’ where we watched a wonderful performance by the band and also ‘dikir barat’. They enjoyed it very much. Then, we took our partners up to the gallery where we had the opening ceremony. It began with a speech by our very own head prefect followed by another speech by a representative from NOSE High School. Our own principal then took the opportunity to welcome all the Japanese. The Vice Principal also gave his speech which was translated by the tour guide.

            The mood was enlightened as we took turns to sing our school songs. We sang it loud and proudly. When everyone was seated down, the performances began. A power point presentation was shown by each of the schools showing each other the beauty of each of our cultures and all the activities we have in school. When that was over, we continued with the Malay mock wedding. The bride and groom were dressed beautifully and they were followed by the playing of the ‘kompang’ as they walked down the isle. The vice principal of NOSE High School and our school principal were invited up on stage as the couple sat down on the ‘pelamin’ to bless them. The fashion show was the next on the agenda. Students walked down the isle wearing traditional clothes and short explanations were projected onto the wall for the Japanese to read. I thought that it was very educational. The performances then continued with the Malay, Chinese and Indian traditional dance. Everyone enjoyed it very much especially the Japanese students. They were in awe after watching the dances.

            The Japanese students  then took their turn to leave us in awe by showing us a karate demonstration. After that, the students were asked to get up and stack the chairs at the side of the gallery. The gallery was then separated into half. The Japanese students arranged themselves on the right hand side of the gallery whereas the Assuntarians gathered on the other side. It was finally time for the sharing of dances. The Japanese students danced to a song called ‘Doikosho, Soran’ and the teachers told us to sing along and so we did! Then we thought our Japanese friends the ‘poco-poco’ dance. When the sharing of dances were over, half of the students in the gallery played congkak while the other half did henna. The bell was rung after the 20 minute mark and that marked the time that we had to switch.

            After another 20minutes, the students got up and we had the sharing of songs. The Assuntarians sang ‘ Rasa Sayang’ to the students and they sang a song to us as well in Japanese. The emcees then told everyone that it was time to go down to the canteen to have lunch. At around 1.15pm, the Assuntarians brought their Japanese partners up onto their respective busses. When attendance was taken, we were finally off to the Taman Jaya LRT station. There, we got onto the LRT to get to Central Market. We took our partners all around and introduce to them many different things. Then we boarded the LRT again to go to KLCC. We were allowed to walk around as well for awhile. We were given a time to meet at the entrance. When everyone was gathered at the entrance, we took turns to take a group picture with the Twin towers as our background. Near the entrance, the bus was already waiting for us. It then took us to the Hotel where we were suppose to have dinner. It was around 5.30pm at that time. While waiting for our food to arrive, we took the time to bond a little more with our partners and the other Japanese students. We took many pictures too. When the food was finally served, we took turns to take our food. After dinner, there were many performances by both the Japanese and Assunta students. It was a very good day. Although we were all very sad that it had to come to an end, all of us had a really great time and we hope that the relationship that the students have made with each other will last for a very long time.

A Report on General Meeting cum Celebration for Leo International Day

           On the 13^th of January 2012, The Leo Club of Assunta had our first general meeting of the year. It was really nice to see all the leo’s again as well as the new probationers that want to join us this year. We started off with the leo pledge and continued on with the roll call. The leo’s were very enthusiastic during the meeting that day. Then our Lion advisor, Lion Ivan, our teacher advisor’s, Puan Betty and Puan Martita, as well as all the Board of Directors of the year 2011/2012 were introduced to all the new members. After that, there was a short introduction by the Leo president on what the Leo Club is all about.

            A few leo’s were then called to the front to talk about all the past projects that we had over the month of November and December. For example, the Joint Christmas Carolling project, the Novels for Nepal Bazaar, The 3 S (sweep, swept, swap) project and so on. Then, there was an announcement on all the upcoming projects for the month.

            A short speech was given by Lion Ivan. He talked about the Blind Leading the Blind project that is organised by the Lions Club of Petaling Jaya which is going to be held in the month of April. There will be cards that will be passed out to all the Leo’s to collect money and raise as much as we can. A short game called ‘Hi, my name is Joe’ was played and al the leo’s enjoyed themselves.

            Since we could not celebrate Leo International Day last year, we decided to celebrate it during this meeting with all the Leo members. A cake was baked for the occasion by our teacher advisor, Puan Betty and the Leo’s used their creativity by decorating the cake with pictures and wordings. At the same time, all the January babies were called upfront too. A birthday song was sung for all of them and Lion Ivan, Puan Betty and all the January babies cut the cake together.

            We made sure that each of the leo’s had a slice of cake before the meeting was adjourned. It was a really fun meeting and it was really great to see all the leo’s again after such a long holiday.

A Report on the Leo Leadership Camp

            The Leo Club of Petaling Jaya Integrity organized a Leo Leadership Camp in which  10 Assuntarians participated . The aim of this camp was to develop leadership skills, team work and values such as believing and trusting in one another to name a few. This camp was held from the 3rd to 8th of December 2011 (6 days and 5 nights).

3rd December 2011

                We gathered at A&W at around  8am and boarded the bus. Before continuing on with the journey, we stopped by at SMK Damansara Jaya to pick up the Leos1 from Damansara Jaya and Taman Sea. Upon arriving at Kem Bina Semangat, Kuala Kubu Bharu, we had the opening ceremony. It was then followed by a briefing and an ice breaking session . We were grouped into our respective team with a team mentor who was there to guide us throughout our stay.

                In the afternoon, we had our first activity which was called trust fall and high rope. For the trust fall, participants had to fall on their back and had to be supported by other participants who are their friends and thus learn the value of trust.

                The high rope was our next activity where participants had to walk on beams and ropes high above ground level with safety harnesses.  2 hooks were hooked to a safety line while we had to learn to control our fear of heights and stay as calm as possible.  In the evening, we created our group names which were Patrick, Fireball and T.M.N.T, our team cheers  as well as paint our own team flags to give us the team spirit that we will need throughout the camp.

4th December 2011

                After breakfast, we had a short briefing on the safety measures for jungle trekking.  Throughout our journey , we gained knowledge on different skills; to build a I day house with nature, identifying the variety of plants which are edible, an insight into the forest flora and to test if a particular plant is poisonous. In the midst of our trekking, we had river crossing. We also enjoyed our time in the waterfall. It was very cooling and rejuvenating after a hot and sticky morning. In the evening, Leo Nicholas Chew conducted a dessert survival activity. The dessert survival quiz really made us squeeze the juice out of our brains, but we still manage to do it.

5th December 2011

We had rappelling where participants have to rappel down from high above ground level while being belayed and hooked to a safety line. The aim was of course to gain confidence and boost one’s self esteem. After having some tidbits to munch on, the ‘plug the hole’ activity was being carried out where participants had to apply their physics knowledge. A barrel with numerous holes was assigned to each group and a piece of rope and newspaper was distributed as well. The holes were to be covered and the barrel to be filled with water from the river. The winner would be the group who could fill the barrel with the most water and of course teamwork was important here. In the afternoon, we had rafting. Firstly, we had to untangle two ropes which were tangled. Upon untangling it, items were then given to us such as barrels, ropes and planks to build the raft. This was the most challenging part, building it wasn’t easy and just imagine that we had to rebuild it again after being advised by Abang Zack. After building it, we rafted to the other end of the river bank to get our team flag. Here not only was teamwork important but using relevant skills was important to win. “United we stand, divided we fall”

 We were really exhausted and hungry but we can’t deny that we had a marvelous time. In the evening, we did cobweb. Even though we were tired after rafting, we were indeed excited and ever ready to face the next challenge. The target was to get everyone onto the other side through the web without touching it within the given time. Though we exceeded the time set, we were still proud of ourselves that everyone showed teamwork and supported each other throughout the course.

6th December 2011

                We started the morning with exercise and a jog. After that, we had to do 12 feet wall where participants had to support each other to go over the 12 feet wall. Then, we had flying fox which everyone really enjoyed. Later, we had the obstacle course where 16 obstacles had to be overcome . We did face many punishments, but we really did have a great time facing them. At night, we campedby the jungle and had a campfire. We sang songs and played games organized by the committee.

7th December 2011

                Day 5, the mine field course was carried out. Participants had to cross a designated route on the ground with only small checkpoints clear from “mines” using planks and a piece of rope as bridges. We then went for kayaking under the scorching sun which burnt our skin.  In the afternoon, the certificate and award presentation as well as evaluation and sharing session took place. During the farewell night, we played cards until 6 am the next morning as it was our last day together.

8th December 2011

                On the last day, everyone was really sad and gloomy as it was time to leave. We enjoyed ourselves very much and had gained valuable knowledge, a life time experience and exposure. We also bonded really well and hope to meet up again soon. We left the place with heavy hearts realizing that no man is an island.

A report on the CNY Decoration project

                On the 10th of January 2012, the Leo Club of Assunta was asked to decorate the school's lawn way with Chinese New Year decorations. The Leo Club was provided with red cloths, lanterns, cherry blossoms and ang pau packets by the school.

                A total of 5 Leo members stayed back after school to decorate the lawn way. The members took some time to analyse the area to get a design. Once we got a design we started to decorate for we were running out of time. We decided that the red cloth would serve as the main attraction and the lanterns and cherry blossoms were used as decorations.

                We were running out of time and some members had to leave but the decorations were not done. In the end there were only 2 members left to hang up the lanterns and cherry blossoms. We were finished by 3:30 pm. After we were done, we packed up the rubbish and unused items and put them back in the office.

                The Leo members worked really well together and the project went very smoothly. Eventhough the time limit was short, we managed to get the project done.

A report on the 3S Project

               On the 7^th of January, a joint project called Joint 3S (Sweep, Swept &Swap) with the Leo Club of Penang City, along with Leo Club of Ipoh Unity and the sister clubs supported by Lions Petaling Jaya was organized by Leo Pji.  We were said to meet up at SMK Damansara Jaya at 9 in the morning. After the arrival of all the participants, we headed off to Kirtarsh handicapped and disabled children's home.

                When we arrived at the place, everybody started greeting and wishing the children and the elders. Firstly, the girls were busy entertaining the kids while the guys were busy cleaning and making the place look brand new. Games were carried out and the kids were very fascinated at the badges, hence the badges were prizes for the games. After many talks, games and cleaning up, it’s finally time for lunch. We headed to a Restaurant called “Salam Satu”. Each of the Leos thank the Lions with gratefulness for treating us lunch.

                After 2 hours of lunch, we went back and continue where we left off. Each kid was guided by a Leo to play the fireworks. Happy faces were shown and that really satisfied us. It is finally time for the surprise, which is Chinese new year songs and a very special performance by the Leos from PJI.

                After everything is done, the caretaker there thanked us, everyone did a great job, the whole place looked brand new after that. We all left the home happily and we were all very satisfied with what we’ve done.

A Report on the ‘Novels For Nepal Bazaar’

                On the 10^th of December 2011, a few leo’s from the Leo Club of Assunta, Damansara Jaya, Taman Petaling and Taman Sea came together to help out at the Arts for Grabs bazaar that was held at Annexe, Kuala Lumpur. The whole purpose of this bazaar is to raise funds to build a library in a school in rural place in Nepal.  Secondhand books were sold at the bazaar to raise the funds needed.

All the Leo clubs have had a bookdrive in their own schools so that the books can be sold.

                At around 10 am, all the Leo’s gathered at a&w. As soon as everyone arrived, we walked to the LRT station which was just opposite with the many bags and boxes of books that were supposed to be sold at the bazaar.

                We bought out tickets and we were off to the Central Market. They were very surprised with the amount of books that we brought over. As soon as the books were sorted according to how much it was going to be sold at, we wrote notes to the children in Nepal. All these notes will be given to the children during their next visit.

                The bazaar was a great success. And the Leo Clubs will continue to help them raise the funds that is needed to ensure that a library will be built for the children in Nepal.
