Report on a Kidney Talk by National Kidney Foundation
At 1.30p.m., we registered at the registration counter. As an admission fee, each one of us had to either bring 5cm-thick of old newspapers or 5 used aluminium tins. It started with the emcee introducing the project organizer, Interactor Sarah with her speech. Then the emcee introduced the speaker for the day, Ms. Lu Yean from National Kidney Foundation.
Ms. Lu Yean spoke all about our kidneys. She started off with introducing us the National Kidney Foundation, it was founded in 1969 and is a non-profitable organization. She told us their motto which is “Giving Hope”. She told us about the functions of our kidneys and how important they were .Then she spoke about a few types of kidney diseases there were, which are Chronic Kidney Disease and End-Stage Kidney Disease. A few symptoms of kidney disease were constant tiredness, loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting. Swelling of certain body parts were also one of the physical symptoms.
She then proceeded to the people who were at high risk of getting kidney disease, which were senior citizens, diabetic patients, obese people, hypertension, people who smoke and those who take in plenty of pills a day. Kidney disease can also be inherited from one’s family. Kidney disease can happen to anyone at an age.
Next, she told us about the types of treatments there were for kidney disease such as dialysis and kidney transplant. We were informed about the prices of each of the treatments which was, up to RM100, 000 for a kidney transplant. For dialysis, there were two types of it, which is haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. Haemodialysis will have to be conducted up to 4 hours per session and 3 times a week while a peritoneal dialysis is 30 minutes per session and it is conducted 3-5 times a day.
After the talk, there was a short quiz about kidneys which she gave away a keychain for every correct answer. Then the president the Interact Club came up to give a small token of appreciation to Ms. Lu Yean. Then project was then ended at 2.30p.m.. At the back of the gallery, there were a few posters up about our kidney and we were encouraged to take a look.
This talk sure has benefited all of us who attended as we now know how to prevent our kidneys from kidney disease.

Report on 'Use Your Own Paper' Project
A few items were prepared; they were hairdryers, basins that are half filled with newspaper pulp, a few sieves, a few pieces of cardboards and sponges. With all these items, the Health Environmental Director of Leo Club of SMK Assunta, Leo Eva Chen did a simple demonstration on the field on how to recycle old newspapers and therefore renewing them into a new piece of paper.
1. First off, immerse your sieve into the basin of pulp and water. Make sure you get pulp onto the sieve.
2. Secondly, shake your sieve gently to make sure your sieve is covered with an even and THIN layer of pulp.
3. Thirdly, raise your sieve; you now have a thin and even layer of pulp. Use a piece of cardboard to press out excessive water from the pulp. Then, use a sponge to absorb the remaining water from the pulp gently.
4. Once you are sure that the layer of pulp is reasonably dry, tilt it over carefully along with the cardboard, the layer of pulp should now be on your cardboard. In a VERY slow and gentle motion, carefully remove the sieve to ensure that the layer of pulp does not attach to the net while you’re removing it.
5. Use a hairdryer to blow dry the layer of pulp.
6. Before the layer of pulp dries up completely, once again carefully peel off the layer of pulp. Make sure the damped pulp is still attached in one piece without any holes or dents.
7. Finally, flip it over and dry the other side of the piece of pulp. Repeat the drying process twice and you should now have a dry and new piece of paper.
Everyone took turns to make their own new piece of paper. The whole process including the drying process took about an hour. Once everyone was done, they gathered at the pavilion once again and were told to decorate their new pieces of handmade paper.Though the paper quality may not be as good as factory processed papers, it is still writable and not to mention unique, we even made one for Lion Ivan as a souvenir from us! The project ended at approximately 3.30pm and everyone took a group photo before leaving.
Overall, this project was rather successful and no doubt environmental friendly. And it was definitely not as dirty as it sounds and looks. We had fun recycling old newspapers and to bond with one another.
ARE YOU CAPABLE OF DOING THAT???

A Report on the ‘Food for Charity’ Funding Project
At 10.20a.m Leo Florence, Leo Suet Yee and Leo Lillian Toh set up a stall at the cafeteria. Our sales increased when the form 4 and form 5 students came down for recess. We promoted our spaghetti to the students and many of them were interested in buying our food. At 10.50a.m, we packed and cleaned up the area as recess had ended.
Eventhough we were given 20 minutes to sell our food, we managed to raise RM50.00. Without cooperation, we will not be able to reach our target. This project had not only been successful, but it taught us to work together as a team. Thank you.
