A report on 'Little India'

A luminated celebration

An early Deepavali celebration for the kids at the Juara Home came on the 2nd of November when the members of the Leo Club of Assunta Secondary School made a visit to their home. The 20 girls were certain that it would be great way to spend a day with the children.

As soon as the girls had entered the home, they were greeted by the caretakers of the home. After a couple of minutes, the caretakers brought the children out to meet the girls who were eagerly waiting for them. There were around 15 children in the home, most of them were ranging from the ages of about 4 to 12 years old. Some were really timid and some were just so full of life that they made the girls smile from ear to ear.

To get the day started, the girls first had to know the names of the children and to break the ice as some of the children were really quiet and refused to even open their mouths to let their names out. The girls had been to other orphanages before and knew exactly what to do when it came down to getting the children to blurt out their names. It was a simple game which involved all the children and the girls to stand around in a circle and introduce themselves. It was mad chaos when the game started as the kids were laughing and running about with the girls. The main objective of the game was not to get caught in the middle of the circle and to play you simple had to know everyone’s name. It was certainly a joyous way to kick things off.

Later on , the girls got the children into two groups , each group had around 7 orphans and about 4 members of the Leo Club of Assunta. Since Deepavali was fast approaching and this whole visit was mainly to indulge in the Indian culture, the girls made up their mind that it was a must to design a ‘rangoli’ with the children as it has also been said to be the bearer of good luck. Since time was a constraint in the situation, the girls had come ready with the designs and coloured rice. The children sat down in their groups as enthusiastic and pumped up as they could be ready to get things started.

By the end of activity , the day was already in full swing, with the kids speaking at the top of their voices requesting for more games. Next up the girls thought the children might get a little hungry during the games, so they brought along some food and since it was nearing Deepavali, the girls had brought along with them some Indian traditional cakes. They children were elated to see the numerous containers filled with the cakes. While the children were savouring the cakes, the girls got some time to teach them a little about what the art of henna. Some of the children even wanted the girls to draw out simple designs onto their hands.

As all good times have to come to an end, the girls soon had to leave the children as it was getting late. The visit ended on a high note with the children hugging the girls as they said their good byes’ and some even asking the girls to come back as soon as possible for another round of games.

Report on the ‘PECH’ Carnival

On the 23rd of October 2010, which was on a Saturday, the LEO club of SMK Assunta attended the PECH(Praise Emmanuel Children’s Home) carnival that was being held in the MBPJ Community Hall in Kelana Jaya. The main objective of this joyous event was to raise funds for the Praise Emmanuel Children’s Home. The LEO’s who attended this carnival where there to give their support. They also lent a helping hand to the stall owners that needed help.

The carnival began at about 10 in the morning. There were many stalls that were set up to raise funds on that day. Food stalls and a junkyard sale were set up in the hall while the games and the drink stalls were set up outside. The main attraction to the carnival was the games. The children especially enjoyed playing archery, snake and ladders, Bingo, the wheel of fortune and many more. The winners of each game were given a prize.

Many chairs were arranged in the hall too for the parents and children so that they could sit down and watch the performances that were put up on stage. Among the performances was the magic show, a singing performance by the very children of the home they were raising funds for, karaoke and much more. Everyone enjoyed the performances a lot.

It was really easy to get coupons because there were always people walking around selling them. After a long tiring day, the carnival finally ended at around 3 in the afternoon and everyone was satisfied and happy to go home.

We found that this carnival was a huge success and we were all very happy that we attended the carnival on that day. Eventhough not many LEO’s were able to attend, we managed to give our outmost support in making this carnival a good one.

Report on Vision of Peace

On the 17th of October, the Leos of Assunta assisted during the Peace Poster Contest 2010 (Theme: Vision of Peace) jointly organized by the Lions Club of Petaling Jaya and Sin Chew Jit Poh held at Subang Avenue. We kept an eye on the participants and helped them if they were having any troubles as they were mostly below the age of 12.

The participants gathered around and the opening ceremony was conducted. Lion Kesavan as the president of the Lions Club of Petaling Jaya gave his speech and presented a token of appreciation to those involved in organizing the event.

Then, the participants were divided into their respective catagories. There were two catagories in this competition, which was just colouring or drawing and colouring. The children took their places and prepared their work area. At 11am the competition started. The duration given to complete their artwork was about 2 hours.

At 1.30pm, the children handed in their completed masterpiece and were given time to have a break. At 2 pm, it was the prize giving and closing ceremony. Many prizes were given out and the winner of both catagories had impressed the judges with their wonderful artwork. It was great to see so many talented artists even at such a young age.

WALK FOR SIGHT REPORT

On the 10th of October, the Lions Clubs International District 308B1 and 308B2 had organised a walkathon, ‘Walk For Sight’ in conjunction with Lions World Sight day. The event was held at the MBPJ Civic hall. The purpose of organising this event is to create awareness among the community on the importance of sight. All the donations will be proceed to the Lions Eye Clinic which provides free eye care and cataract surgery for the old folks. A total number of 7 leos had participated in this 3km walk.

Around 6:30, leos were gather at the main entrance of the Civic hall for registration. A few of supportive ex-leos had also attended this walk, such as Leo Jaishree. At 6:45 am sharp, all participants had their warm up exercise lead by Leo Darius .The Waka Waka dance and the Roti Canai dance were great. Leos were enjoying themselves while doing this exercise. Later, a welcome speech by organising chairperson, Lion Dato’ Neoh were made continued with our special guest, Yang Berhormat Elizabeth Wong.

The cheque and memento presentation were presented by the Lions. Next, the demonstration ‘Walk For Sight’ were made. The walk were started at 7:40 am sharp. Leo had to pair up for the walk. All leos were given a blind fold to experience the challenges in the 3km walk blinded folded. During the walk, all leos where very cooperative to finish the walk. Leos were exhausted and tired yet they insisted to continue the walk with full leo spirit.

After the walk finished, co-organising chairperson, Lion Vicky Yong gave a thank you speech. He really appreciated our attendance. Drinks were given out to all the participants sponsored by the Yeo’s and Indocafe’ company. About 9:55 am, the lucky draw was held. Although our school leos did not manage to win any prizes, but we were really happy to see our sister club happily receiving the prizes. This event officially ended at 10:15 am.

A Report on the ‘Cheesy N Sweet’ Funding project

From the 27th till the 29th of September 2010, a project was held at the cafeteria of Assunta Secondary School. 10 Leos were involved in this project. The purpose of this project is to raise funds for the club.

On the first day of the project, we sold cupcakes and cheesy wedges. Around 10.20 a.m. the Leo members set up a stall at the cafeteria. Our sale went on well when the students came down for recess. After we finished selling most of the food, we packed up and cleaned the area.

The next day, we sold cupcakes and it was a hit as everybody were interested in buying it.

On the last day, only cheesy wedges were sold. The sale on that day was the most successful among all the three days. The cheesy wedges sold like hot cakes. Many students were interested to buy. Even teachers.

The total sum of money we raised for all three days were RM299.00. All these were made possible thanks to the cooperation showed by all parties who participated.

Splatter of Colours report!

On the 5th and 6th of October, members of the Leo Club of Assunta paid a visit to Pusat Jagaan Kanak-Kanak Sayang which is an orphanage located in University Garden, Petaling Jaya. A total number of 5 Leos attended this project and we were accompanied by 2 teachers. The main objective of this project was to complete a mural painting on one of the walls of the home.

The Leos arrived at the home around 9 in the morning and got to work right away. The first thing that had to be done was deciding the exact design that was to be drawn onto the wall. Leo Bue had submitted a design earlier in the month which was approved by the care takers at the home and therefore that was the design that was to be used. The care takers of the home had also mentioned that they wanted their logo to be part of the mural and so Leo Bue was given the task to incorporate the logo into her design. After making the final touches to the design, a couple of Leos started to sketch out the design onto the wall. For the sketching, chalk was used as it was easy to erase in case of a mistake. The drawing did not take long and they it was done in a blink of an eye.

Since it was a home for the kids, the design consisted of a cloud and a rainbow stretching across the wall. After the drawing had been done, the Leos had to paint it. The colours that were chosen for the rainbow were such as red, orange, blue, green and purple. Since we did not have the exact colours , we had to blend several different colours to obtain the colours which were to be used for the rainbow. While some of the Leos were painting the rainbow on the wall, the others had to come up with stencils which would then be used for the wordings on the wall. Leo Grace had previously printed out the letters onto A4 paper and she left it up to the Leos to cut out the alphabets to create a stencil.

At around 12.30 p.m. the Leos found that they were almost three quarters done with the work. The only thing that could not be completed was painting the red into the rainbow as there was no red paint available and it could not be conjured up. One of the things that was still yet to be done was to paint the Leo emblem onto the wall which was one of the minor jobs of the day. The Leo emblem was painted on by Leo Bue and Leo Saliza.

Lastly at around 2.30 in the afternoon, the Leos put the finishing touches onto the mural and they were done with it. Before leaving the home, we cleaned up the mess and also donated some food to the children at the home as we said our good byes’.
