Pop Tab Project

On the 14th of November 2013, the Leo Club of SMK Assunta sent three representatives to attend the closing ceremony of ‘The Pop Tab Project’, organized by a group of Mass Communications students of IACT College as part of one of their final projects. The closing ceremony was held in the Gallery of IACT College.

The objective of ‘The Pop Tab Project’ was to raise awareness amongst students on how pop tabs can be recycled to build prosthetic limbs for those in need. The goal of the campaign was to collect at least 10 000 pop tabs. However, with the undying support from everyone, ‘The Pop Tab Project’ managed to exceed their goal and collected more than 30 000 pop tabs. The pop tabs will be donated to the Prostheses Foundation, a non-governmental organisation in Thailand that will then produce affordable and eco-friendly limbs for those in need. The campaign was a joint effort between this enthusiastic group of Mass Communications students and the Leo Club of SMK Assunta.

At about 2.00 p.m. guests started arriving and taking their places. The event officially commenced at 2.15 p.m. A few guests of honour including our very own Leo Daphne Cheryl Tan, gave brief speeches on behalf of their own societies and committee. Mr Vincent Wong Wai Sang, Political Secretary, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, officiated the prestigious event by placing the final pop tab on the sculpture of the PETRONAS Twin Towers which was purely made of aluminium pop tabs and cans.

Leo Daphne had the honour of unveiling the final count of pop tabs collected which came up to about more than 30 000 pop tabs! A mock ‘pop tab cheque’ representing the 30 000 pop tabs was presented to the Leo Club of SMK Assunta . The event ended at about 3.00 p.m. Light refreshments were served at the back of the Gallery. It was a very meaningful event especially for the students who put in a lot of effort to make this campaign a success. Everyone had a great time.

For the first activity, the male Leos were given a list of all the contact numbers of the female Leos present that day. They had to quickly make their mark to find their partner for the night. The female Leos were scattered around the whole building which consisted of 26 floors. The male Leos had to make their way and search for their partner. After that, all the newly-formed couples had to compete in a game which features its chili rice balls as punishment for the losing couples.

Dinner was served at about 7.30p.m. Everyone took their time to enjoy the food while socializing with others. After dinner, there was a game which challenged all the couples to perform a cat-walk together and strut two poses while they were at it. There were some romantic and hilarious stunts pulled off by our fellow Leos.

The next game required all the couples to tie their hands to their respective partner of the night. The challenge was to search for as many candies as possible around the area while being tied to their partner.

The event finally ended at 9.30p.m. A small prize-giving ceremony was held to acknowledge the Leos with the best costume and the winners of the games. The Leos ended the night with some group photos before bidding goodbye. It was an enjoyable night indeed.

Report on Buttons for All!

From the 1st of October till the 4th of October 2013, the Leo Club of SMK Assunta sold badges to the students of SMK Assunta. The Leos took a few weeks to design the badges and to send the designs to the printer and get them printed. There were 3 designs that were printed which were all designed by Leo Melissa Cheng.

All the Board Members took at least 20 badges to sell. Then, as the form 4 Leo members were having their finals, the form 3 Leos helped to sell the badges and there was a profit that was made. The Leos even stayed back on some days to sell the badges to the afternoon session students.

Overall, the project was quite a big success and everyone loved the badges. Not only students of Assunta bought them but the teachers as well as Leos from other schools.
