Pop Tab Project

On the 14th of November 2013, the Leo Club of SMK Assunta sent three representatives to attend the closing ceremony of ‘The Pop Tab Project’, organized by a group of Mass Communications students of IACT College as part of one of their final projects. The closing ceremony was held in the Gallery of IACT College.

The objective of ‘The Pop Tab Project’ was to raise awareness amongst students on how pop tabs can be recycled to build prosthetic limbs for those in need. The goal of the campaign was to collect at least 10 000 pop tabs. However, with the undying support from everyone, ‘The Pop Tab Project’ managed to exceed their goal and collected more than 30 000 pop tabs. The pop tabs will be donated to the Prostheses Foundation, a non-governmental organisation in Thailand that will then produce affordable and eco-friendly limbs for those in need. The campaign was a joint effort between this enthusiastic group of Mass Communications students and the Leo Club of SMK Assunta.

At about 2.00 p.m. guests started arriving and taking their places. The event officially commenced at 2.15 p.m. A few guests of honour including our very own Leo Daphne Cheryl Tan, gave brief speeches on behalf of their own societies and committee. Mr Vincent Wong Wai Sang, Political Secretary, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, officiated the prestigious event by placing the final pop tab on the sculpture of the PETRONAS Twin Towers which was purely made of aluminium pop tabs and cans.

Leo Daphne had the honour of unveiling the final count of pop tabs collected which came up to about more than 30 000 pop tabs! A mock ‘pop tab cheque’ representing the 30 000 pop tabs was presented to the Leo Club of SMK Assunta . The event ended at about 3.00 p.m. Light refreshments were served at the back of the Gallery. It was a very meaningful event especially for the students who put in a lot of effort to make this campaign a success. Everyone had a great time.

For the first activity, the male Leos were given a list of all the contact numbers of the female Leos present that day. They had to quickly make their mark to find their partner for the night. The female Leos were scattered around the whole building which consisted of 26 floors. The male Leos had to make their way and search for their partner. After that, all the newly-formed couples had to compete in a game which features its chili rice balls as punishment for the losing couples.

Dinner was served at about 7.30p.m. Everyone took their time to enjoy the food while socializing with others. After dinner, there was a game which challenged all the couples to perform a cat-walk together and strut two poses while they were at it. There were some romantic and hilarious stunts pulled off by our fellow Leos.

The next game required all the couples to tie their hands to their respective partner of the night. The challenge was to search for as many candies as possible around the area while being tied to their partner.

The event finally ended at 9.30p.m. A small prize-giving ceremony was held to acknowledge the Leos with the best costume and the winners of the games. The Leos ended the night with some group photos before bidding goodbye. It was an enjoyable night indeed.

Report on Lend an Eye Project

On the 14th of September, a few kids from the Agathians Shelter were brought for an eye check-up at E’Image, an optical shop nearby, for an eye check-up. The reason this project was organized was to sponsor spectacles for the children. The reason being, vision deficiency is one of the world’s cruelest disability that can lead to blindness.

4 Leos volunteered for this project, with the Organizing Chairperson being Leo Renugaa. We fetched the kids from the home at around 10 am. To prevent chaos at the optical shop, we brought the kids 5 at a time. This was convenient as Leo Renugaa’s dad offered the transport.

We managed to get all the kids checked by 12 noon. At the end of the day only 2 kids needed spectacles. We let the kids pick their favourite frames for the glasses. We sent the kids back to the shelter at 12.30pm. The caretaker from the shelter thanked us for our help. We are hoping to continue this project again next month.

Report on Bake My Heart Out IV

The bake my heart out project is back again and it's better than ever! On 29th August 2013, a bake my heart out project was organised yet again to raise funds for the club. Around 15 Leos volunteered to help out. This activity was carried out at the SMK Assunta cooking room at approximately 10.30a.m until 1.05p.m. The project was fun and educational without a doubt. It also gave us some time to strengthen our bond amongst each other. This project was successful but trials and errors had to be endured. The project started with the O.C, Leo Wan Khadijah, gathering the volunteers and after explaining to us what we would have to do in order to bake the turnovers, everyone was ready to do their part. Everyone was assigned to their own station to maximize space and save time. Little obstacles such as limited supply of pastry sheets, minimal capacity of the ovens and even the shortage of apple filling were dealt with superb diligence. As the delectable pastries were put into the over to bake, the O.C along with her team, discussed on the price and packaging of the turnovers. After that was settled, it was time to cool and pack the apple turnovers so that it would be ready to be sold to hungry students and teachers. It was impressive how fast those little pastries sold out. Moreover, considering how well the turnovers did on the first day, the project was extended and was carried out on 30th August too. Of course, everyone also lent a hand into cleaning the cooking room. We made about RM 250 in profit. All in all, it was a good experience especially for those who have never done this before. Hopefully, more Leos would be keen on participating in this project in the near future.

Report on Leo Basketball Tournament

On the 12th of August 2013, the Leo Club of SMK USJ 8 organized a Leo Basketball Tournament. The purpose of this project is to raise club funds and to create or bring bonds closer between the Leos of different schools.

A total of 14 clubs have participated in this tournament which includes Leo Club of Assunta, Leo Club of Subang Utama, Leo Club of Taman Petaling, Leo Club of La Salle PJ, Leo Club of Sri KL , Leo Club of La Salle Klang, Leo Club of SMK USJ 13, Leo Club of Taman Sea, Leo Club of Damansara Jaya, Leo Club of SMK Seafield, Leo Club of PJI (O), Leo Club of Ipoh Unity (O), Leo Club of IPG Campus (O) and Leo Club of SMK USJ 8. The participants were separated into groups of ten which were named after colours.

The event commenced at 9am where the Organizing committee separated us according to the respective groups given and announced the first match, Sky blue against Sea Blue. All the matches were truly very interesting as people from different places and different abilities were playing together. Watching from the side and playing in the game gave a totally different feel. When you are watching from the side, it was amazing to see how good other Leos can be at basketball and served as an inspiration to oneself. When you are in the game, you just didn’t want to disappoint my team members even though you may have just met them. It truly was an experience nothing can replace as we’ve met so many new friends and cooperated to do our very best even if we couldn’t play very well or had to support the weaker players.

Every single game was very intense and jaw dropping at moments. Being able to share that with one another, even if you don’t really know that person, is not something we get an opportunity to do every day. Honestly, I really didn’t want to go in the beginning because of the fee that was a little pricey. I really would have regretted not going now that I look back because I got an opportunity to make so many new friends and play with or against them.

The matches went on and on until 5pm. The Leos were all gathered to announce and present the medals to the winners. The winner of the loser’s pool was the Green Team. The runner up for the winner’s pool was the White Team and the champion of the tournament was none other than the Black Team! After that, they announced the MVP’s of the game and they really did deserve the award judging by their performance. After taking a group photo, everyone was dismissed and went home with nothing but good memories.

After swimming and eating, all of us gathered under a gazebo. We had our traditional gift exchange session. Once we were all done talking and relaxing, we helped clean up the place before leaving. This is also to ensure the students of the school have a free flow of water that they do not have to pay for compared to buying a bottle of water from the canteen.
