Report on 'Bake My Heart Out' Project

On 13th September 2012, the Leo Club of SMK Assunta held a ‘Bake My Heart Out’ fund raising project. This project is to help raise funds for upcoming events such as Christmas Caroling and the Leo Orientation Camp.

There were 20 Leos who participated in this project. It was lead by Lion Malcolm and our teacher advisor, Pn. Betty. We met at the ‘Bilik Masakan’ at 8 o’clock. We made blueberry turnovers. We started by filling the pastries with blueberry jam and then folded it. After that, it was glazed on top with egg. It was then placed on buttered trays and was ready to be baked.

After about 45 minutes, we were done and there were no pastries left. We rested and waited for the pastries to cool down. When it was cooled, we packed all of it into individual plastic bags to be sold. Shortly after that, a few Leos went to sell them at the canteen. Surprisingly, we sold all of our pastries within an hour.

After that, we all left and had our recess. 20 minutes later, we met up again at the ‘Bilik Masakan’ for our second batch. This time we made apple-flavoured turnovers and more blueberry turnovers. We had a system this time. It consisted of 8 people to do the filling, 6 people to glaze the pastries with egg, 2 people in charge of the oven and 4 people in charge of sales. When the next batch was done, it was cooled and packed. It was sold out within the next hour and a half.

In addition, it was very profitable day. We made about RM200 in profit that day. After that we cleaned up and placed everything back in their places. It was also a really a fun day. Lion Malcolm also allowed us to eat some of the pastries. All in all, it was a day I did not regret spending.

Report on SightFirst Campaign

On the 12th of August 2012, the Lions Club of Petaling Jaya and the Lions Club of Hulu Selangor organized a SightFirst campaign. This campaign was to give free eye check-up to the poor. Lions and Leos from the Lions Club of Petaling Jaya, Lions Club of Hulu Selangor, Leo Club of SMK Assunta, Leo Club of Taman Petaling and the Leo Club of Petaling Jaya Integrity attended the project which was held in Batang Kali.
We were assigned to the task of handling the registration and helping the patients to the eye check-up van. Citizens aged 40 and above were only allowed the free eye check-up. It was an eye-opener as many of us take for granted the good eyesight that we have. This project has taught us to be grateful for what we have. There was also a free blood test for the patients to test the sugar level in the blood.
The Sightfirst campaign was featured in the China Press newspaper. All in all, the project was a success and we hope to attend and conduct more projects like this in the future.
