Report on Bake My Heart Out III

On the 25th of January 2013, 12 Leos volunteered at the Bake Your Heart Out III which was held at the cooking room of SMK Assunta at 1.00 pm after school. The project was not only fun and exhilarating, but a first time experience for the new Form 3 members. Their participation was truly a blessing as we had more hands to work, and in turn the project was successfully completed by 2.00 pm. In addition to the Form 3's, our dear teacher advisor Pn Betty Toh and her husband were also there to help with creating the delicious confectionaries as well as supervise the project.

This time around, the Leos took a twist on a classic pastry. Instead of the boring old apple turnovers, we decided to jazz it up a bit by making pineapple turnovers! The Leos were first divided into groups, to make the workspace more efficient, as well as organized. Once settled some Leos started off by kneading the dough, while some spread thick delectable spoonful of pineapple filling into the soft pastry. Another handful of Leos were in-charge of packaging the sweet treats into plastic bags, while the Form 3's were sent out to sell and promote the desserts.

Much to our surprise, the Leos managed to sell all the turnovers in less than an hour. The teachers as well as students really enjoyed the pastries very much and we were more than pleased to hear it. After the sales were over, we all lended a helping hand in cleaning up the utensils and trays, sweeping the floor and washing the dishes.

At the end of the day, we were blessed to have made a good profit, whilst enjoying ourselves. The Bake My Heart Out Project was yet again another success, thanks to all our dedicated Leos! The experiences that we have received are countless and very special. We hope more Leo's will take part in this amazing project next time around.

Report on Visit To Second Chance Animal Shelter

On the 24th of January 2013, the Leo club of Assunta had organized a trip to Second Chance Pet Shelter to volunteer. 13 Leos participated in this project. We gathered at school around 10.00 a.m. and left for the pet shelter after everyone arrived. After arriving at the pet shelter, we separated ourselves as some Leos were afraid of dogs. 8 Leos went in to clean whereas the others waited outside.

We learned how to clean the kennels from the adult volunteers and we managed to clean at least 7 to 8 kennels. At about 12.30 p.m., we fed the dogs. It was mixed with dog food and rice. After feeding all of the dogs, we carried some puppies before leaving the shelter. We learned that most of the dogs in the shelter were abandoned or abused.

We were dismissed and we headed back to school. We were all tired, dirty and smelled like dogs but we all had a wonderful time volunteering at the pet shelter. We hope to volunteer again someday soon.
