Report on Christmas Caroling 4Dec09

On the 4th of December, members from the Leo Club’s of SMK Assunta, SMK La Salle PJ and SMK Sultan Abdul Samad organized a Christmas carolling event. The main objectives for this project was to lift the spirits of the children at the homes, to create a bond between the kids and the Leo’s and also to give a donation to the homes. Before we could sing for the kids, we needed practice so the Leo’s gathered at the function room at Maxwell Towers on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd of December. We constantly worked on our singing and prepared the gifts and hampers for all homes. It was the 4th of December, the day that we had to visit the homes. We gathered at the bus stop at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Assunta at around 8.00am and attendance was taken. After that, the Leo’s got onto the bus and we left at 8.40am. On the bus, we were given our christmas hats to be worn and some of us had to help get our Santa Claus dressed. We arrived at The Shelter Home at 9.00 in the morning. At first the kids were shy but after the Leo’s started talking to them they became a little more excited and even joined us with the singing. We sang about 6 songs, among the songs we sang were ‘ Joy To The World’ and ‘Rudolph The Red Nose Reindeer’. At the end of it, we presented a hamper to the caretaker of the home as a token of appreciation for letting us come. As we were about to leave, the kids started grabbing our hats and we had to run around chasing them just to get our hats back. It was a fun time but sadly we had to still say ‘goodbye’ to them.

We boarded the bus and headed of to Praise Emmanuel Children’s Home. The kids were all very excited to see us there. As some of us had been there before, the kids already knew us and were already talking away. Then it came time for us to sing and the kids joined in again. Some of the Leo’s created a little circle with the kids and jump and danced around in it. Many of the kids actually were drawn to the guitar players as they seemed to have a liking towards the guitar. Just before leaving we got together with the children to take a group picture and to present the gifts to the kids and also the hamper to the caretaker.

Then, around 11am left for the next home which was the Agathian Home. At the Agathian Home, we got to know the kids a little better before singing with them. After the little bonding session we started to sing the songs. Half way through our singing, Leo Shereen came up with the idea to play a game. Everyone joined in and it was a whole lot of fun. At the end of it the kids were given their presents and we presented a hamper to the caretaker of the home. We also took a group photo with the kids before leaving. On our way out, we wished all the kids Merry Christmas. It was 12pm when we boarded the bus again. Everyone was already getting hungry so it was time for lunch. The bus driver dropped us of at Old Town. Most of us walked over to Mc Donald’s to get our lunch and some just went to a nearby shop to get some food. We were then asked to get back to the bus at about 1 o’clock.

Next, we headed of for Precious Home. They looked really happy as Santa Claus came into their home. Then we started to sing and some of them joined in. Some of them even went in front to dance with Santa Claus as we sang the song ‘Santa Claus Is Coming To Town’ . Later on we had the kids hug Santa Claus to get their presents. They did as they were told and we went on to singing our last song. After taking a group photo with the kids we gave a hamper to the caretaker and left for the next home.

It was 2.00 when we reached The Ozanam Home(II). There weren’t that many kids there as most of them had gone for holiday camps. Most of them who were there were teens. We had them join us with the singing and we also played some games with them. Then we gave out the presents and a hamper to the caretaker as we headed off to next home. It was raining outside but we had one more home to go before we called it a day. So we walked over to The Ozanam Home(I). We got into the house and sat around with the children and started to sing with them. Santa Claus then gave out some presents and we wished the kids a Merry Christmas. At about 3.45pm we left the home after taking a group picture again.

This event was a fun one and should definitely be carried out every year. The objective for the event was achieved and the most important thing is that we were able to put smiles on the faces of the children. I hope that we would continue to carry out this event for the years to come.
