Report on Leo Oppor-Unity Camp 2009

On the 13th and 14th of November 2009, which was a Friday and Saturday, the Leo Club of SMK Assunta organized an opport-Unity camp. The camp was held in SMK Assunta. The duration of the camp was two days and one night. The camp participation fees for each individual student were RM 15. The students who participated in this camp were inclusive of students from form 4, form 3 and also form 2’s. Two teacher advisers, Pn Low and Pn Aishah, supervised the camp.. The objectives of this camp are to develop leadership skills among Leos, to foster good friendship amongst Leos, to enhance organization skills amongst committee members, to teach Leos how to work together in unity through the many team building games during the camp, and to build confidence and boost the Leo spirit in Leos. The main objective is to promote Leo to the form 2’s who will be moving up to form 3 next year.

The camp started at 5pm on the 13th of November 2009 and ended at 6pm the following day. We started the camp with the tent buildingEach tent could fit 6 people. There were about 8 to 9 tents that we built.
When we were done building the tents, we waited for all the form 2’s to arrive as they had school that afternoon. Then we went to the Bilik Kuliah for the opening ceremony. The opening ceremony started as soon as Lion Ivan Ho arrived, following that, we all had dinner in the school canteen..

At 9pm after dinner, we headed to the field to start the ice breaking game and other fun games. For ice breaking, we played a game called ‘Hit and Run’. This game was organized by Leo Divane and Leo Darshina. In this game, we were all required to know each and every one’s name at that camp. Right after that ice breaking, we went to the hall for more games. We played games called ‘This is a..’, ‘Cat and Mouse’ and ‘I like everybody, especially those…’. All of these games were organized by Leo Jaishree. We also played a game called ‘Ha Ha Ha’ which was organized by Leo Shereen. When these games were done, Leo Jaishree divided us to four groups for the next game which was ‘Amazing Race’. Each group was told to choose a team leader, a team name and a team cheer. The ‘Amazing Race’ started at 12 midnight and ended at 2.30am. Everyone was exhausted after the game. We all went to bed in our tents right after the game

The next day, we woke up at 6.30am for the morning exercise. After the energetic exercise, we washed up, packed up, kept our tents and got ready for breakfast. At 8.30am which was after breakfast, we started our first game of the day at the Mutiara Basement. The game was called ‘Cobweb’ and was organized by Leo Cheryl. Then, we headed to the Bilik Kuliah for a leadership seminar by RCC, Lion Clayton Tan The seminar was very inspiring. When he ended his seminar, the Leo Club of SMK Assunta handed a token of appreciation to Lion Clayton Tan and also to Lion Ivan Ho. At 12pm, we went to the canteen for lunch.

After lunch, we were told to clean up the hall, the toilets and everywhere around the school. Then, we played a game called ‘Let’s Go around the World’ organized by Leo Lilian. We were also divided into four groups for this game. This game was held at the field and it was a tiring game because we had to run around a lot as our school field was humongous! The winner of this game was group four and the second place went to group three. Then, we had tea and the winner of the game shared their gift with everyone. At 3.30pm, we played the last game for the camp which was called ‘What’s your action’ organized by Leo Cheryl. At 4pm, we had a closing ceremony where we took a group photo and also presented gifts to the ‘Amazing Race’ winners. The Leo Club of SMK Assunta had also given Pn Low and Pn Aishah a token of appreciation.

This camp was a fun and wonderful. The Leos had achieved the objectives of this camp. We all learned a lot of moral values which are very important such as communication, working together as a team, time management, listening carefully, talk one by one, be alert all the time, having good strategies, not giving up and having a good leader. The camp was a success. I hope that next year there will be more camps like this.
Thank you

Zoo Day Report :D

On the 31st of October 2009, the LEO Club of SMK Assunta participated in a project called ‘Zoo Day!!’. It involved 19 members of the club from form 3 and 4, accompanied by our teacher advisors, Pn Aisyah and Pn. Low Kim Hong as well as our Lion advisor, Lion Ivan Ho, taking a group of children from the Sentosa …Centre, all of whom are between the ages of 4 to 12 years old, to Zoo Negara to give them the opportunity of getting to see exotic animals and also learn more about them. The project was held to promote environmental awareness as well as providing the less fortunate children with an experience that was fun but yet educational.

We left the school by a school bus at exactly 8.00 am. We took about 15 minutes to reach the centre to pick up the children before we took off again. In the bus, we had a get to know session where the LEOs had to interrogate their ‘anaks’ about themselves and they were to tell three things about their ‘anaks’ to the rest. The 45 minutes after that pick up point in the bus was used for this activity to provide a more cheerful surrounding and to make sure the children don’t get bored.

We reached the zoo at exactly 9.00 am which was according to the schedule in hand. We had a group photo session with the children before we took our wrist passes and entered. We began by visiting the reptile house first. There, the children got to see many species of crocodiles, snakes, pythons and cobras. After that, we went upstairs to the Amphibian World to see the many kinds of amphibians, some alive safely behind the glass, and some that are dead and preserved inside jars. As we were about to leave however, we had an unexpected surprise, though some of them weren’t so pleased with it. There was an escaped bullfrog somewhere at the middle of the stairs. Some refused to move until the frog jumped out of the way giving them the freedom to actually move.

After that, we followed our planned route which was to go see the lions and tigers. We took a few pictures of ourselves with the lions and tigers at a distance. Then, we did our clubs roll call in front of the lion as it represents our logo. Later, we went around and got to see the other animals like the monkeys, bears, hippopotamus, cranes and flamingos. However, the part we enjoyed at that moment was seeing the giraffes and elephants. The children took a while to process the fact that these creatures look much bigger and majestic up close as compared to the ones they usually watched on television. This got them really awed and appreciative that they got the chance to see them up close. They then enjoyed leaning in to take pictures of themselves with the giraffes and elephants in the distance.

We soon moved on to the Animal Show which was scheduled to begin at 12.00 pm. We took our seats and waited for the show to begin. The show began on a very grand note with the release of a flock of birds. One of the instructors then came out to welcome us all and tell us some of the few rules we have to follow. After that, the show officially began with a performance from a parrot that was all the way from Venezuela, South America. It showed us its basketball skills as well as its acrobatic ability. The next performance was a from a 4 year old seal from Africa followed by a 19 year old sea lion from Amsterdam, Netherlands. The show lasted for about 20 minutes before it ended.

At 12.20 pm, we headed towards the Bee Museum instead of the aquarium as according to schedule as many people were also headed there after the show. Therefore, to avoid any mishaps, we skipped that stop. At the bee museum, we got to see real live bees as well as models of it. We also got to taste some of the organic honey straight from the bee farm. After that, we all went to the ‘Wild’ restaurant where we had a burger, fries and a cup if iced Milo for lunch. It was a moment for us to rest and refill ourselves before we take off again.

At exactly 1.00 pm, we headed towards the Savannah Walk. Here, the animals were allowed a bit more space to roam as in like their natural habitat where the herbivores are not confined with their own species as compared to the other animals in the zoo. The feeling was as if we were in Africa itself. We then followed the route that took us to our final pit stop where we got to see all the orang utans, chimpanzees and apes. It was extremely exciting to see the movement of these creatures and how in a way it shows a few traits of a human being. As it was our last stop, we took the route back to the entrance where we checked out and took another snapshot as a group with out LEO banner in the middle.

We left the zoo at about 2.00 pm with the same bus. In the bus, we asked the children of how the trip was and got a positive response to it. Then we heard a speech from the organizing chairperson herself, Leya Tomas, the co-chairperson, Darshina Ruba and the funding director for this project, Ting Pei Lim. We then handed out a few souvenirs to the children as a remembrance. The trip back home was shorter than the trip to the zoo. We only took 45 minutes in all to drop the children off at their centre and reached school at exactly 2.45 pm where we all headed back home after that. It was a truly enjoyable experience that one could never forget.

Report on Movie Drive

MOVIE SCREENING FOR CHARITY.

On the 27th and 28th of October 2009, the Leo Club of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Assunta held a movie screening. The title of the movies played was shown is G.I. Joe and The Proposal. This movie screening was held at the school’s AV room 1. The movie started showing at 10.30 in the morning. The tickets were sold at RM 2 each to mostly form three students.

The objective of the movie screening was to raise funds for charity. The money collected is for the purpose of buying Christmas gifts for orphans. We collected RM 196 in total and sold 98 tickets to the students. The board of directors of the Leo Club of Assunta had also decided to screen the movie on this date as it coincide with the form 3 students finishing their PMR examination and so they could enjoy themselves.

Before the movie started, some of the members of the Leo Club had arranged the chairs in the room and prepared the projector and the computer. The students were waiting anxiously outside the room but were also told to keep quiet as the form four students were still having their end year examination in the next room.

The movie ended at around 12 noon on both days. The students loved the movies and gave positive comments. Many of them were glad they had watched the movie. The event was a success and the students were all happy. We hoped that projects like this would be carried out more often.
