A Report on ‘The Grin of Green Project’ (tree planting)

On the 18 of September 2010, we had a project called the “The Grin of Green”. The Grin of Greens is about tree planting. The tree planting was held at the Raja Musa Peat Forest Reserve. It was of SMK Assunta. Our Lion advisor, Lion Ivan and the teacher accompanied us on this project.

We left school at 7.10 am. We had our breakfast in the bus. Our breakfast was sponsored by High 5. We reached the Raja Musa Peat Forest Reserve at 8.30 am. We were briefed on how to plant the trees by the “World’s Greenest Man”. After that, we took pictures together with him.

We started carrying all the baby Mahang trees to the area where we were going to plant the trees. After that, we were put into groups of 5 people and carried the trees into the peat swamp area to be planted. First, we dug a hole in the mud until we could see water. Then, we took out the plastic from the roots and put the trees into the hole. After that, we closed up the hole that we dug. That was how we were to plant the trees.

After we planted the trees, we had a group photo together with other volunteers. There were a total of 100 volunteers including our school who helped out in the tree planting. We planted about 1500 trees. We left the Raja Musa Peat Forest Reserve at 11.30am. It was 1 ½ an hour journey from the Raja Musa Peat Forest to SMK Assunta. We reached school at 1.00pm.

This project was definitely very exhausting. We were all under the sun for the whole morning. However, this has definitely taught us much and we now know how much effort has to be put in to ensure the wellbeing of Mother Nature. We went home knowing that we have made a difference and helped save the environment in one way or another.
