Report on Blind Leading the Blind Charity Walk 2013

On the 16th of January 2013, the Leos of SMK Assunta participated in the annual Blind
Leading the Blind event. This exhilarating event was organized by the Lions Club of Petaling Jaya. The event was attended by all the Leo Clubs and Lions Clubs in the district. This year, the event was held at the Dewan Sivik Car Park in Petaling Jaya. The event was sponsored by many generous companies as well as individuals.

At the first crack of dawn, as the sun was glistening through the horizon, the excited Leos made their way to the venue. The event spotted an amazing turn up, of people from all walks of life. As soon as the Leos had taken their attendance, they were of mingling and mixing away with the other fellow Leos from our sister clubs. There were certainly many bonds and friendships made during the event. This was especially good for the incoming Leos as this was definitely an opportunity for them to get to know more Leos.

Around 8.00 am, all the participants were asked to gather in the car park for some warm up exercises. The exercises were led by some Leos from the Leo Club of Taylors College Subang Jaya. The work out was amazing, as it was accompanied by music, which really sent everyone’s spirits high. After the warm up by the energetic Leos, a few VIP’s proceeded to the podium to make a few speeches. Minutes before the event began, the organizers gave a short briefing on the rules and regulations pertaining to the walk. The participants than were given their blindfolds and were ready to rumble.

At precisely 8.45 am on that lovely Sunday morning, the participants started on the route. They walked in pairs of two, one of the partners being blindfolded, while the other guided the blindfolded partner. The high-spirited Assuntarian Leos took a lead, as they were somewhere in front of the entourage, happily chanting the Leo Roll Call. They were certainly enjoying themselves. They also made banners and play cards for the event, to further promote their passion and excitement.

The walk was very pleasant and refreshing as all the participants were chatting along the path and strolling animatedly all the way. About half way through the route, all the participants stopped for a short break to devour some quenching refreshments. The Leos were spirited all the way, until the very end.

The walk ended at around 9.40 am. The participants were tired but very delighted as they had just done something for a good cause. The Leos rested a bit amidst loud conversations and contagious laughter. Refreshments were again provided at the car park. Goody bags were also given to all the participants of the event.

Upon entering the car park after the walk, all the participants were required to take a number for the lucky draw. Since it was also Father’s Day, there was a special lucky draw for all the fathers amongst the participants. The lucky draw was very exciting as many happy people took home many great prizes and goodies.

As the event approached its conclusion, it was time to give out the prizes too the respective Leos clubs. We were more than proud when the organizers announced that our Leo Club had bagged all the prizes in each category! It was a very beautiful moment for all the Leos. The prizes won were for Outstanding Attendance, Most Donations Collected and Overall Champions. This just goes to show how much we love our club, and strive to always serve it to the best of our abilities. Our dear president, Leo Kendra Hema was jubilant as she strided to the podium to accept the champion’s trophy.

At the end of the day, all the Leos were very delighted with their wonderful achievements. We also learned so much. We learned to be thankful for the things we take for granted in our lives like our eyes and the gift of sight. The Leos also had the amazing experience of walking blindfolded all over the town! It also helped us gain trust in one another even more, and grow stronger as Leos. We also learned to be generous and give to those less fortunate than us. We hope that the event next year will have an even staggering attendance, with more Leos striving to make a difference in our community.
