A Report on the Annual Blind Leading the Blind Project

On the 15th of April 2012, The Leo Club of Assunta participated in the Annual Blind Leading The Blind Project organized by the Lions Club of Petaling Jaya. The main purpose of this walk is to raise the awareness of the importance of sight. All the Leos were asked to gather in front of Sivic Hall at around 6.45 a.m. to get their attendance taken. Other schools were there around that time as well. The rest of the crowd started walking in at around 7 a.m. As time went by, the amount of participants started to increase tremendously. Soon, the whole carpark was full. At around 7.45 a.m, the Blind School of Setapak arrived and the leos of Assunta willingly paired themselves up with a blind student from the school.

When the participants signed up, each of them were given a sticker to be stuck on their shirts and a blindfold as well. Just before the participants were let off for the 3km walk, a warm up session was conducted by 3 PJI members. We all really enjoyed it. When that was over, everyone was more than ready to start the walk. The pops from the poppers signaled everyone to begin walking.

A few of the Leos stayed back to help out with the goodie bags . We arranged them behind counters for each of our schools to ensure that each and every leo from our schools get a goodie bag. Although they didn’t join in the walk, but they had fun unloading bags from the lorry and arranging them accordingly.

The leos shouted their leo cheers to get the attention of the public throughout the walk. It was a very interesting walk and the leos especially enjoyed it very much. Not long after that, they arrived back to where they started. Evryone was exhausted after such a long walk. As they walked in, they were asked to put their blindfolds into boxes and they were given a lucky draw coupon. There were drinks provided for everyone such as milo and 100 plus. The participants lined up for the refreshments.

Each participant then had to go to the counters to get their goodie bags. There were many sponsored things in the goodie bag. After everyone was settled down, the Lions asked all the leo clubs that participated which were the Leo Club of Assunta, Damansara Jaya, Taman Sea, Taman Petaling and Petaling Jaya Integrity to sit right infront for the prize giving ceremony. Our club received the first prize for bringing the most number of participants for the project and also for collecting the most amount of money. We were given a trophy and some money for our club to use for upcoming projects.

Right after the prize giving ceremony, the lucky draw began. We had our fingers crossed and some of us got lucky. The prizes were really good ones such as a flat screen tv, a home theater system, irons and lots more.

At around 11.30 a.m, the project was finally over. Some of the leos stayed back to help them clean up the place. Although everyone was really tired after such a long walk, the leos didn’t mind at all and each and every one of them went back with a good experience. I felt that the walk was a very successful one and I really hope that we have reached out to the public a lot more and that more of them would join us for the walk next year.
